Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania on August 14, 1947, he was the son of the late James Thomas and Sarah Smith Shumac. Mr. Shumac was a retired Lab Technician at Talecris in Clayton.A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 18, at 1:00 PM in Freedom Bapstist Church in Smithfield with Rev. Mike Walls officiating. Burial will be in Selma Memorial Gardens.Surviving are his wife Monica Shumac; sons, Robert Thomas Shumac, Jr. of Linden, PA, James Aaron Shumac of Huntingdon, PA and James Thomas Shumac of Four Oaks, NC; daughters Wendi Sue Dawes of Flemington, PA, Kassandra Lynn Shumac of Selma and Jessica Marie Downam of Four Oaks; sister Bertha Mae Rifenburgh of Middleburg, PA; and eight grandchildren.The family will receive friends at the church following the service. | Shumac, Robert Thomas Sr (I10401)

| 4615 | Robert was the son of James A. L. Huston and his wife, Elizabeth Morgan Johnson. His unusual middle name comes from an old family friend and business partner of his grandfather, Andrew McConnell January. Not only was Andrew the friend and partner of William Huston, he also married William's daughter Sarah in 1816. This Andrew was the grandson of one Peter Janvier, who came to the United States from France. So deep were the ties, that Robert's uncle was named Andrew January Huston. Sometime prior to 1887, Robert enrolled in the Hospital Medical College of Louisville, which was part of the University of Louisville. He graduated in 1887 or 1888. Robert was an allopath, meaning he practiced allopathic medicine. Wikipedia says that a Samuel Hahnemann coined the term "'allopathy' to refer to what he saw as a system of medicine that combats disease by using remedies that produce effects in a healthy subject that are different (hence Greek root allo- "different") from the effects produced by the disease to be treated. The distinction comes from the use in homeopathy of substances that cause similar effects as the symptoms of a disease to treat patients (homeo - meaning similar)." Robert married a young lady named Kate Francis on June 5, 1888 in Floyd County, Indiana. Sometime after their marriage, the couple moved to the state of Washington. Their two sons, Vance Morton Huston and James Mallernee Huston were born in Chehalis County, which is now Grays Harbor County. A record for James has been located, but one for Vance hasn't. Robert and Kate had one other child, who was born and died prior to the 1900 Census being taken. It is not known whether the baby was born in Washington or California. San Francisco city directories during the period from 1898 through 1905 list Dr. Robert J Huston living and working at various addresses in San Francisco, some being Doric St., 162 Tremont St., 224 Tremont St, 3914 24th St., Colon St., 1145 Guerrero St and 2570 Mission. There are problems with some of those addresses on today's Google Earth. There is a Doric Alley, but no Doric St. The Doric Alley is a short alley consisting of several residences just off Mission St. These could have been businesses at the turn of the 20th Century. I couldn't find a Tremont Street in San Francisco, although there are several in the surrounding area. There is a Fremont St, which could mean the Tremont St. was a typographical error. During the 1900 Census, the family was living in San Francisco, California at 207 S. San Jose Ave. Kate and Robert separated around 1905. It is not known if they ever divorced. Robert took his two sons and went to Japan. American Consular records from Japan state that he and the boys arrived in Shimonoseki in September, 1905. His Certificate of Registration of American Citizen for the years 1907, 1909 and 1911 all give Robert's birthday of September 14, 1865 in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1907, Robert and his sons were still living in Shimonoseki. By the time Robert filled out his registration in 1909, they were living in Yokohama. The 1911 registration shows them living at 78a Kyo Machi, Kobe, Japan. It states they arrived there on May 16, 1910. On all 3 registrations, it states that Robert was in Japan to practice medicine. While Robert worked, Vance and James attended school. James's entry in the University of Cincinnati in 1921 says that he attended St. Joseph College in Yokohama. Wikipedia states that this was an international school, mainly attended by foreign children, from kindergarten through secondary school. Records show that Vance came home in December, 1911. He would have been 20 years old. I haven't found a record of James coming home, but I know that he did. He is listed in a San Francisco directory as living there is 1916. Like his father, James went on to medical school, graduating from the University of Cincinnati Medical School in 1921. He was an eye, ear and nose specialist, practicing in Burlingame, California for many years. Records of Vance are scant. Robert passed away in Kobe on July 9, 1920. On the "Report of the Death of an American Citizen", completed by the American Consular Service, it states that Vance was living in "Patten, California." (sic)Patton is an unincorporated area of San Bernardino County. It's home for the California State Hospital, aka "Patton Mental Hospital." The 1920 and 1930 Censuses list Vance as an inmate at the hospital. He died there in 1932. Back to Robert...the report of his death by the Consulate in Japan states, that Robert's cause of death was uremia. It also says, "cremated, ashes to remain, pending instructions from family, in charge of Mr. L.A. Garland." Whether his ashes stayed in Japan or were brought back by one of his sons is unknown at this time. Robert's estranged (or ex-wife) passed away in 1919. | Huston, Robert January (I5602)

| 4634 | Rose was the daughter of Carl Christian Jacob Ferdinand Obenland and his second wife, Christiana Katharina Goeldenboth. She was born in Maryland on August 19, 1891. Rose was one of three daughters born to Carl and Christiana. Her sisters' names were Katharine and Caroline. Rose also had two brothers who died in infancy. In 1900, Rosa was living with her aunt, Rosa Goeldenboth Hallwig in Howard County, Maryland. The 1910 Census lists Rose living in Lower Gwynedd, Maryland, with her mother and sisters. Mother Christiana was a laundress, as were Rose and her sister Katharine. In 1918, Rose married Louis Franklin Finley. He worked as an iron worker. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Marriage Index lists their marriage certificate #411892 in 1919. However, Louis's WWI registration card lists Rose as his wife. This card was filled out in September, 1918. Rose and Louis had one son, Louis Franklin Finley, Jr. He was born on June 20, 1921 in Pennsylvania. The 1930 Census lists Rose as married, but the head of the household. Her husband Louis is not listed on the census as living with his family. I found him listed as an inmate at the Bastern State Penitentiary, in Skippack Township, Montgomery, County, Pennsylvania. Rose passed away in September, 1968 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
