Johann went by his middle name of Christian. He was born in Ilsfeld, Wurttemburg, Germany to Jakob Obenland and Marie Elisabet Widmann. He was first married to Christiane Luise Schulkraft on April 30, 1854. Christiane was the daughter of Georg Adam Christian and Anne Katherina Vogelman Schuhkraft and was born May 11, 1833. Christiane passed away on Sept. 25, 1858. On May 5, 1859, Christian married Auguste Rosine Peter. Rosine was born to Jacob Friedrich and Sophie Dorothea Rumerlin Peter on January 5, 1827. Christian and Rosine had two children that have been found at this time: Friederika Dorothea Caroline, born on October 31, 1859 and Marie Caroline, born May 22, 1862. In 1882, their two daughters immigrated to the United States. Christian and Rosine followed Friederika and Mary two years later. They left Bremen, Germany on the Elbe and arrived in New York on September 9, 1884. The Elbe was in service from 1881-1895. It was owned by the North German Lloyd shipping line. The ship was built by John Elder & Co., of Glasgow, Scottland. It's maiden voyage was from Bremen-Southampton to New York on June 24, 1881. The Elbe collided with another steamer, the Crathie in the North Sea on January 30, 1895. Over 330 lives were lost when the ship went down. Christian was a blacksmith. The Peoria, Illinois Directory for 1890-1892, lists him working for John Schneider at 100 Cross St., in that town. For some reason, Christian returned to Germany and then came back on the Prussia on September 29, 1894. Christian died in 1897. If he is buried in the same cemetery as his wife, daughters and grandchildren, Bluff City Cemetery has no record of it. His estate was probated in Kane Co., Illinois in 1897 under the name Obenlandt. Friederika was christened on Nov. 6, 1859 at the Evangelisch Church, Heilbronn, Neckarkreis, Wurttemburg. Friederika was the daughter of Johann Christian and Auguste Rosine Peter Obenland. She was born in Heilbronn, Neckarkreis, Wurttemburg, Germany on Oct. 31, 1859. She was christened on Nov. 6, 1859. In 1882, Friederika came to the United States with her sister, Maria. (Mary). In about 1889, Friederika married Anton E. Viellieber. They made their home in Elgin, Illinois. They had 6 children: Lydia, born in October, 1889; Samuel, born in September, 1890; Christian C., born in March of 1892; Marie Carolyn, born in November of 1893; Rosa, born July, 1896; and Emma, born inAugust of 1899. All of their children were born in Illinois. In 1900, the family was living on a farm in Rutland, Kane Co., Illinois. Anton, Friederika's husband, was a farmer, while she kept house for the family. Sometime between 1900 and 1910, they moved to White Co., Princeton Twp, Indiana. They couldn't be located in the 1920 Census; whoerver, they were found in 1930, living at 484 North St., Elgin, Illinois. They owned their home, which at the time had a value of $3,500. The 1925 Iowa Census states that the highest in reading Fredericka attained was the "6th reader." Their children Samuel D., Rose J. and Emma F. were living with their parents in the house on North Street. Friederika was still keeping house, but Anton was then working as a night watchman at a shirt factory. Their son Samuel was also working as a night watchman, also at a shirt factory. Rose was working in the screw department of a watch factory and Emma was an inspector at a shirt factory. Daughters Lydia and Marie were married, with families of their own. Friederika died on Feb. 18, 1946 in Elgin. Her Illinois State Death Certificate is #0006623. Strange as it may seem, her sister Maria (Mary) Preiss, died on the same day. The sisters were buried with their husbands and children at Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin, Kane Co., Illinois.

Mary was born in Heilbronn, Neckarkreis, Wurttemburg, Germany, on May 22, 1862. She was christened on June 8, 1862 in the Lutheran church in Heilbronn. She was the daughter of Johann Christian and Auguste Rosine Peter Obenland. Mary had an older sister, Friederika, who was born 3 years previously. Marie and her sister came to the United States on the Nicolas. Her future husband, Fred Preiss, was also on the ship. Whether they knew each other in Germany, or met on the ship, is unknown at this time. After coming to the U.S, Marie used the name Mary. The Peoria, Illinois Directory of 1890-1891, lists a Miss Mary Obenland as either living or working at 406 N. Madison Avenue in Peoria. She was a domestic, so she actually could have been living and working at the same address. Mary and Fred Preiss married in Peoria, Illinois on April 12, 1890. The 1900 Federal Census shows Mary and Fred living at 552 Franklin St. in Elgin. Fred was a watchmaker. There are 4 children listed in the 1900 Census: Christian, Albert, Henry and Gustave. Mary stated that she had had 5 children prior to June of 1900, but only these four were living. So one had died at birth or in its infancy. By the 1910 Federal Census, Mary had had 7 children, with 5 living. This means that the family added daughter Emily during those 10 years, but had also lost another child at birth or in early childhood. By 1920, Mary and Fred would have lost sons Christian, in 1916; Albert in 1919 and Gustave in 1920. Only two children died as mature adults; namely Henry who died when he was 60 years old and Emily who died when she was 95. Only Henry had children. By 1920, Fred and Mary were living at 215 N. Hill St, a home they owned. Fred died in 1936. He was buried in Bluff City Cemetery with his sons.

His description on his draft card shows him to have been of medium build and height, with blue eyes and black hair. It also says that he had a physical disability. Albert died one year later. (Ill. Gustave was the son of Fred W and Maria (Mary) Obenland Preiss. He was born in Elgin, Illinois on Feb. 20, 1900. Gustave filled out his WWI Draft Registration card on Sept. 12, 1918. He was living at 215 Hill Ave. in Elgin at the time. Gustave worked as a clerk for Ackerman Brothers, at 164 Milwaukee, in Elgin. His draft registration said that Gustave was of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair. The 1920 Census was taken on January 6th. Gustave was living with his parents at the time. He would die just a month later. Gustave died of a ruptured appendix, as per one of his nieces. The date was Sept. 15, 1920. He was only 20 years old. His Illinois State Death Certificate is #0040634

Emily died at the age of 95 in Elgin, Illinois, where she had lived her entire life. She was the daughter of Fred W. and Maria (Mary) Obenland Priess, who were both born in Germany. Emily was one of 5 children born to Fred and Mary. All of their children were born in Elgin. Emily was born on April 18, 1901. Emily had worked for the Elgin National Watch factory prior to retiring. She was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church. Emily never married and had no children.

Henry was the son of Fred W. and Maria Caroline Obenland Preiss. His parents were both born in Germany. Henry registered for the draft for WWI the same day his brother Albert did. (June 5, 1918.) At the time, Henry worked for A.C. Barclay of Elgin, Illinois. His draft card shows that he had gray eyes and black hair. Henry worked in the hardware store in Elgin. Quite possibly it was the A.C Barclay store mentioned on his draft card. He married Rosa Grimm on Oct. 5, 1930 in Elgin, Illinois. The couple had 7 children: Warren, born July 5, 1931; Virginia, born Oct. 27, 1933; Janet; Charlott, born May 9, 1939; Suzann; Cynthia; and Diane. All of Henry's children are alive as of Sept., 2008, with the exception of Warren. He passed away Dec. 7, 1978 and is buried in Morning Side Cemetery, Dubois, PA. Henry worked in a hardware store while his wife kept house for the family. His daughter Charlott said that he was a "laid back" kind of guy. Henry died in his home in Elgin, Illinois due to a cerebral thrombosis. He was on his way upstairs to bed when it happened and he fell down the stairs.
