James Lee Huston was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to James A and Elizabeth Huston. Elizabeth's maiden name was Elizabeth Morgan Johnson. Both of James Lee's parents were born in Kentucky. Elizabeth was born in Johnson Junction, which is not on any of today's maps. Johnson Junction was in Fleming County. I believe that it is now called Flemingsburg.

James married Emma Cecilia Bachmann Howe in Kansas City, MO on Jan. 20, 1908. Emma was the adopted daughter of Frances R. Howe of Porter County, IN. (See Emma's bio on Find a Grave under Emma Price.)

The couple settled in Los Angeles, CA where they had two children, James Francis and Geraldine Cecilia. Emma kept house while James worked as a traveling saleman. On one Census, it says he sold shoes.

In January, 1922, James and Emma were divorced. The records are in Los Angeles County, D3058. James then married his housekeeper, a widow named Gertrude Johnson, in Venice, CA on May 27, 1922. On the marriage certificate, James' occupation is listed as, "a man of leisure." James was 53; Gertrude 45.

James Lee died in Los Angeles on Sept. 19, 1935 at 9:30 AM of heart disease, with a contributing factor of cerebral thrombosis. He had been ill from September 2nd.

As yet, I don't know where James is buried. His death certificate states that he was buried on September 21, 1935. The place of his burial is listed as the University of Southern California. The funeral director is listed as LA County General Hospital, and he was not embalmed. Could this mean that his body was donated to science? I just don't know at this time.

Robert was the son of James A. L. Huston and his wife, Elizabeth Morgan Johnson. His unusual middle name comes from an old family friend and business partner of his grandfather, Andrew McConnell January. Not only was Andrew the friend and partner of William Huston, he also married William's daughter Sarah in 1816. This Andrew was the grandson of one Peter Janvier, who came to the United States from France. So deep were the ties, that Robert's uncle was named Andrew January Huston.

Sometime prior to 1887, Robert enrolled in the Hospital Medical College of Louisville, which was part of the University of Louisville. He graduated in 1887 or 1888. Robert was an allopath, meaning he practiced allopathic medicine. Wikipedia says that a Samuel Hahnemann coined the term "'allopathy' to refer to what he saw as a system of medicine that combats disease by using remedies that produce effects in a healthy subject that are different (hence Greek root allo- "different") from the effects produced by the disease to be treated. The distinction comes from the use in homeopathy of substances that cause similar effects as the symptoms of a disease to treat patients (homeo - meaning similar)."

Robert married a young lady named Kate Francis on June 5, 1888 in Floyd County, Indiana. Sometime after their marriage, the couple moved to the state of Washington. Their two sons, Vance Morton Huston and James Mallernee Huston were born in Chehalis County, which is now Grays Harbor County. A record for James has been located, but one for Vance hasn't. Robert and Kate had one other child, who was born and died prior to the 1900 Census being taken. It is not known whether the baby was born in Washington or California.

San Francisco city directories during the period from 1898 through 1905 list Dr. Robert J Huston living and working at various addresses in San Francisco, some being Doric St., 162 Tremont St., 224 Tremont St, 3914 24th St., Colon St., 1145 Guerrero St and 2570 Mission. There are problems with some of those addresses on today's Google Earth. There is a Doric Alley, but no Doric St. The Doric Alley is a short alley consisting of several residences just off Mission St. These could have been businesses at the turn of the 20th Century. I couldn't find a Tremont Street in San Francisco, although there are several in the surrounding area. There is a Fremont St, which could mean the Tremont St. was a typographical error.

During the 1900 Census, the family was living in San Francisco, California at 207 S. San Jose Ave.

Kate and Robert separated around 1905. It is not known if they ever divorced. Robert took his two sons and went to Japan. American Consular records from Japan state that he and the boys arrived in Shimonoseki in September, 1905. His Certificate of Registration of American Citizen for the years 1907, 1909 and 1911 all give Robert's birthday of September 14, 1865 in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1907, Robert and his sons were still living in Shimonoseki. By the time Robert filled out his registration in 1909, they were living in Yokohama. The 1911 registration shows them living at 78a Kyo Machi, Kobe, Japan. It states they arrived there on May 16, 1910.

On all 3 registrations, it states that Robert was in Japan to practice medicine. While Robert worked, Vance and James attended school. James's entry in the University of Cincinnati in 1921 says that he attended St. Joseph College in Yokohama. Wikipedia states that this was an international school, mainly attended by foreign children, from kindergarten through secondary school.

Records show that Vance came home in December, 1911. He would have been 20 years old. I haven't found a record of James coming home, but I know that he did. He is listed in a San Francisco directory as living there is 1916.

Like his father, James went on to medical school, graduating from the University of Cincinnati Medical School in 1921. He was an eye, ear and nose specialist, practicing in Burlingame, California for many years.

Records of Vance are scant. Robert passed away in Kobe on July 9, 1920. On the "Report of the Death of an American Citizen", completed by the American Consular Service, it states that Vance was living in "Patten, California." (sic)Patton is an unincorporated area of San Bernardino County. It's home for the California State Hospital, aka "Patton Mental Hospital." The 1920 and 1930 Censuses list Vance as an inmate at the hospital. He died there in 1932.

Back to Robert...the report of his death by the Consulate in Japan states, that Robert's cause of death was uremia. It also says, "cremated, ashes to remain, pending instructions from family, in charge of Mr. L.A. Garland." Whether his ashes stayed in Japan or were brought back by one of his sons is unknown at this time.

Robert's estranged (or ex-wife) passed away in 1919.

James Francis Huston was born on Nov. 16, 1909 in Los Angeles, CA. However, the State of California searched from 1905 thru 1914 and couldn't find a copy of his birth certificate.

His parents were James Lee Huston and Emma Cecilia Bachmann Howe. (The Bachmann was her birth name, Howe was her adopted name.) James had one sister, Geraldine Cecilia, born in 1915.

James was named for his father. I always thought his middle name, Francis, honored his mother's adopted mother, Frances Rose Howe.
However, after finding earlier members of the family I found a great uncle named Francis Lee Huston. Maybe James' middle name came from this great uncle.

James was a trumpet player in Los Agneles. He played in a band with his good friend, Phil Harris. Mr. Harris became a Hollywood legend. You might remember his voice from the Disney cartoon, "The Jungle Book." He was the voice of the bear who sang, "The Bear Necessities."

James committed suicide on March 16, 1937. His death certificate indicates his car was found in Malibu, 100 ft. off of Roosevelt Highway. It states, "Tubed exhaust to his closed Ford car." The cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning. He was 27 years old.

The article in the Los Angeles Times regarding his suicide says he left a note saying, "I will take to the grave the reasons for my actions." His occupation is listed as a musician in an orchestra. At the time of his death he lived at 1327 N. Kingsley, Los Angeles, CA.

His sister, Geraldine had two children. They were always told that their Uncle Jimmy died in a car accident. In 1978, James niece, Cecilia, went to the Los Angeles City Library and found the article about his death on microfilm. Imagine her shock when she learned that James had not died in a car accident, but comitted suicide.

The family story goes that James's mother gave his trumpets and music to his good friend, Phil Harris.

James death certificate shows his name as Francis James Huston, although he was always talked about as Jimmy. And, I believe Forest Lawn where his ashes are, has him listed also as James Francis Huston. Maybe he was given the name Francis James Huston and that is why CA shows no record of his birth under the first name James.

James died on March 16, 1937. He was cremated on Saturday, March 20, 1937 in Los Angeles. His funeral was held the same day. However, his cremated remains were not interred at Forest Lawn until Aug. 10, 1937. I suspect that his mother was trying to get the money together to pay the bill.

Unfortunately, I have not found any pictures of James. I'm looking into getting pictures from a number of sources: LA Unified School District, Coroner's office and Phil Harris's daughters.

Notes:

Geraldine was born in Los Angeles in 1915. Her parents were James Lee Huston and Emma Cecilia Bachmann Howe. (The Bachmann was Emma's name at birth; Howe was her last name by adoption.) Geraldine had one brother, James Francis Huston.

Geraldine's father was a traveling salesman and her mother Emma kept house.

Geraldine's brother James was a musician, playing trumpet with pal Phil Harris back in the 1930's in the Los Angeles area. (The Phil Harris who sang "The Bear Necessities" in the cartoon, The Jungle Book.) James, or Jimmie, as his family called him, committed suicide just off CA 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) near the Malibu pier in 1937. Back then it was called Roosevelt Highway.

Geraldine grew up in Southern California. At one time she lived on Beachwood Dr, in Hollywood, near the big "Hollywood" sign. She told her daughter, Cecilia, how they would go to the beach to a fancy place called the Edgewater Club. (Location unknown.)

Geraldine was married to George David Adamson on March 2, 1933 in Los Angeles County, CA. They divorced in 1939 in Los Angeles County, CA (#3180546)

On June, 30, 1940, Geraldine married Harold Edwin Obenland, of Los Angeles, in Yuma, AZ. There were two children from this marriage: Michael Edwin and Cecilia Ann. The couple made their home in Arcadia, CA. Geraldine and Harold's divorce was final on March 3, 1953.

During her lifetime, Geraldine worked as a bacteriologist, bookkeeper, drapery sewer and even a donut maker at Winchell's. Times were tough because both of her children suffered from severe asthma and it was hard for Geraldine to keep a job when she was always having to rush the kids to the emergency room.

At one time, in about 1962, Geraldine was out of money, so she wrote bad checks to feed her family. She was eventually arrested and actually taken to the jail in Arcadia, where she and her children lived. Her daughter can still remember the minute Geraldine decided to do that. They were walking home along Duarte Rd in Arcadia. Michael came to meet them and got upset when his mother said she had no money for food. Geraldine told her daughter, "I know what I have to do." To this day, Cecilia regards her mother as a heroine even though writing bad checks is illegal.

Geraldine always warned her two children about the "green eyed monster", and had lots of sayings that she used often. She would say, "Pride goeth before a fall" and "You can't get blood out of a turnip." She'd say this during hard times...unfortunately, the landlord couldn't get blood out of a turnip, but he sure could kick us to the curb! My favorite saying Geraldine used was, "That's a bunch of hooey!"

Geraldine died in a convalescent hospital in Monrovia, CA after a long bout with cancer. She was only 53. Her ex-husband, Harold paid for the funeral arrangements. During the funeral, he told their daughter, Cecilia that Geraldine was the only woman he had ever loved.


Buried:
Pasadena Mausoleum. Even though her ex-husband paid for "permanent storage," in 2004 I found her ashes had been stored in the basement of the cemetery for the last 35 years. I brought the ashes home where they how reside in my living room.

In 1911, Vance returned to the United States. I haven't found any records for him from 1911 until 1920. In the 1920 Census, Vance is listed as living at the California State Hospital, aka Patton Mental Hospital, in San Bernardino County, California. It was there that he died on October 21, 1932.

Vance's death certificate, which I received in April, 2014, offered some new information. Prior to entering the hospital, he lived in Los Angeles County and worked as a waiter. Vance was admitted to Patton Mental Hospital on October 4, 1918.

His cause of death is listed as chronic myocarditis, with a 16 year history of dementia praecox. According to Wikipedia, "Dementia praecox (a 'premature dementia' or 'precocious madness') refers to a chronic, deteriorating psychotic disorder characterized by rapid cognitive disintegration, usually beginning in the late teens or early adulthood." Today we know this as schizophrenia.

Vance was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. His brother James was laid to rest next to him in 1960.

James was the son of Robert January Huston and his wife, Kate Francis.

There are discrepancies as to his place of birth. I know that he was born in the state of Washington. During his life, James stated that he was born in Granville, Quinault and Tacoma.

His birth record at the Washington State Digital Archives states he was born in Granville, Washington, which at the time was in Chehalis County. I believe that the record, written at the time of his birth, is correct.

Another problem in writing about James is that there are variations in his birthdate. The date on his birth record at the Washington State Digital Archives says he was born on October 6, 1893. The 1900 Census states that he was born in October, 1893. However, his WWI and WWII Draft Registrations list his birthday as Oct 3, 1894. Two passenger lists also use that date. His California Death Index shows he birthday as being Oct 3, 1896. I think we can discount this record. So, was he born in 1893 or 1894? Was he born on the 3rd or the 6th of October? I think the year was 1893, as that is what his birth record says and what his parents gave to the census taker in 1900. As to the date, I would say that the 6th is probably correct. His father is the person who filed the birth with the county in Washington, so I believe he would know the date his son was born. I could be wrong, though!

Robert and Kate Huston separated in about 1905. Robert left the United States for Japan, taking his two young sons with him. James and his brother, Vance, attended St. Joseph's College in Yokohama. This was a school, mainly attended by foreign children, from kindergarten through secondary school.

Passenger records show that Vance returned to the United States in 1911. James is shown on the passenger list of the steamship Nile, departing from Kobe, Japan on August 6, 1912 and arriving in San Francisco on August 26th, with a stop along the way in Honolulu. The Nile was a British steamship, owned by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.

Kate Huston passed away in San Francisco in 1919 and Robert in Japan the following year.

Records on the Internet show that James attended college at Stanford University in California, the University of Chicago, where he was enrolled in 1917 when he registered for the WWI Draft. He graduated in 1921 with a degree in medicine from the University of Cincinnati.

In about 1918, James married Jennie H. Stout. They came to Caifornia where James established himself as a physician, specializing in eyes, ears and the nose. I can't find any record of any children born to them. They were divorced in about 1936.

A city directory in 1936 shows James living alone at 1526 Carol, in Burlingame, California. In 1937, James is living with a wife, Julia M. Huston. Either James and Julia were divorced or Julia passed away, because James went on to marry Shirley J Stefan on January 27, 1951 in Alameda County, California.

James made several trips abroad. Passenger lists show James and Jennie returning from the Panama Canal Zone in 1924. In 1926, they must have gone to Europe, as a record exists of Jennie returning on the Orbita, from Cherbourg, France, arriving on June 28, 1926. James came home on the Orca, departing from Cherbourg and arriving in New York on July 12, 1926. Why they came home separately is unknown.

In 1953, James and his third wife, Shirley, visited Italy. They returned on the Independence, leaving Genoa on May 26, 1953 and arriving in New York on June 3rd.

Sometime after they were married, James and Shirley moved to Los Angeles County, California. It was there that James passed away on July 15, 1960. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, next to his brother Vance, who had died in 1932.
