    Jacob was the son of Ludwig Heinrich Obenland and Anna Maria Kronmueller. He was born on August 24, 1834 in Ohnholz, Wurttemburg, Germany. He was christened in the Lutheran church in Ohnholz on August 27, 1834. Jacob's father was born in Ilsfeld and his mother born in Buechelberg. Jacob was one of seven children born to Ludwig and Anna Maria. He had four brothers, David Friederich Jacob, Johann Jacob Friederich, Karl and Johann Jacob, who passed away when he was 2 weeks old. Johann's two sisters were Catharina Friederike Dorothea and Catharina Dorothea Friederike Jacobina. Jacob's first marriage was to Christiana Luisa Schukraft, a young lady born in Heilbronn on May 11, 1833. Her parents were Georg Adam Christian Schukraft and Anna Katharine Vogelmann. Jacob and Christiana were married in the Lutheran church in Heilbronn on April 30, 1854. The couple had two daughters. Their first was Karoline Friederika, born on October 21, 1856. Karoline died on August 16, 1857 at the age of 10 months. The records show an unnamed daughter born to them on September 16, 1858. Christiana died sometime between that time and 1860. On October 6, 1861, Jacob married Christine Rosine Foernsler. They were married in the Lutheran church in Oehringen, Jagstkreis, Wurttemburg. Christine was born in 1841 in Baumerlenbach, Wurttemburg, Germany. The couple had one child that we know of, Christian Carl Jacob Ferdinand (Carl), born in December of 1861. In the fall of 1887, Jacob, Christine, their son Carl and Carl's 5 year old adopted son, Adolph, left Bremen, Germany on the Rhein. They arrived in New York in October, 1887. The family first settled in Howard County, Maryland. On October 26, 1890, their son Carl remarried. He and his new wife gave Jacob 5 more grandchildren. Unfortunately, two died as babies. Jacob died in Howard County on December 17, 1897. He was buried in Saint Paul's Lutheran Church near his two grandchildren.     David 's full name was David Friederich Jacob Obenland. He was the son of Ludwig Heinrich and Anna Maria (Kronmueller) Obenland. Ludwig was born in 1789 in Ilsfeld and Anna Maria, in 1806 in Buechelberg.

    He was born in Ohnholz, Wurttemburg, Germany. David was christened on January 15, 1827 in the Lutheran Church in Untersteinbach, Jagstkreis, Wurttemburg. He was one of seven children born to Ludwig and Anna Maria. David's siblings were Johann Jacob Friederich, Catharina Dorothea Friederika, Catharina Friederika Dorothea, Johann Jacob, Johann Jacob, and Charles Karl. Brothers Johann Jacob (the one born in 1834) and Charles Karl also immigrated to the United States. Johann and his family lived for a time in Maryland. After he passed away, his grandson and family moved to Ohio. Johann's wife and three daughters stayed in Maryland. Charles Karl lived in New York, where he married and had eight children.

    David married a young lady named Caroline Eisenmann in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 13, 1859. Unfortunately, the marriage record is hard to read, so if there's any more information to be gleaned from this record, I haven't been able to do it!

    Their first child, Catharine, was born in Deptford Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey, on April 29, 1860. David and Caroline had five other children: an infant who was born and died on June 18, 1863. This child was also born in Deptford Township in Gloucester County. Daughter Mary C. was born May 15, 1865; another daughter, Caroline, was born on May 6, 1867. They also had two sons; George, born December 21, 1868 and David Jr., born in September, 1873.

    The 1870 Federal Census lists the family still in Deptford Township, New Jersey. David was a farmer, whose real estate was valued at $2,000. His personal property was valued at $100.

    Ten years later they're in Greenwich, New Jersey. David was still farming.

    David passed away in East Greenwich, New Jersey on November 15, 1899. He was buried in the oldest part Eglington Cemetery on November 18, 1899.

    Charles or Charlie as he was known by, was born in August of 1839 in Ohnholz, Wurttemburg, Germany. The month and year are taken from the 1900 Census. His parents were Ludwig Heinrich Obenland and his wife, Anna Maria Kronmueller. The 1900 Census also states that both Charles and Friedericka immigrated to the United States in 1865. Any other information regarding their arrival in the U.S is unknown. Whether Charles and Friedericka knew each other in Germany, met on the ship or met here in New York is also unknown. On May 20, 1866 he married Friedericka Pauline Bernecker in Manhattan County, New York. The marriage certificate is #216. Charles and Freda had eight children but only 5 lived. They were: Julie, Charles, Louisa, Frieda and Gustave. In the 1880 Census, the family was living at 316 E. 47th Street, in New York City. Charles was working in a brewery. By 1900, the family had moved to Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn. Charles listed his occupation in 1900 as "hotel." Whether he owned a hotel or was employed at one, we don't know. In the 1910 Census, Charles and his wife were retired and living at 110 Neptune Ave. in Brooklyn. Charles was 70 and his wife was 65. Charles must have passed away by 1920, because he is not listed in the census for that year. His wife, Friedericka, is listed living with their daughter, Frieda and her second husband, Jack Walsh. Sometime after 1882, Carl adopted his nephew, Adolph Gustave Obenland. In 1887, Carl and Adolph left Bremen on the steamship Rhein and arrived in October, 1887 in New York City. Carl's parents, Johann Jacob and Christine Obenland traveled to the United States with them. The entire family settled in Howard County, MD. There, on October 26, 1890, Carl married Christiana Katharine Goeldenboth, also a German immigrant. Carl and Christiana had 5 children. Their first child was born on March 6, 1883 and died 3 days later. Rose was born in August, 1891; Katharine was born on March 5, 1895; Arthur was born on November 3, 1897 and passed away on December 10, 1897. Caroline was born in about 1899. Carl died on December 22, 1899. He was buried with his two little babies and his father in Saint Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Christiana, his widow, stayed in Maryland with their three girls.

    Freda married twice. First to Richard Hopp in 1898, who committed suicide in 1903 and second, to John (Jack) Walsh in 1918. She had a daughter, Ruth, with Richard.

    According to her burial record at Green-Wood Cemetery, she was buried on Nov. 25, 1929. Until I get a death certificate, all I can say is that she probably died Nov. 23 or 24th.

    Freda was buried as Anna H. Walsh; using the last name of her second husband; but she was buried with her first husband, Richard Hopp.

    Louisa was the daughter of Karl Obenland (aka Charles) and his wife, Friedericka Bernecker. According to the 1900 Census, Louisa's parents both immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1865. No passenger lists have been found for either Charles or Friedericka as yet.

    Charles and Friedericka were married in 1866. Louisa was their third child. She had two sisters, Julie and Frieda and two brothers, Gustave and Charles.

    Louisa's father worked in a brewery for awhile and then either owned a hotel or was employed by one. Louisa grew up in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York.

    On May 25, 1893, Louisa married a German immigrant, Johann Georg Kraemer. He would be known in the United States as John George. The marriage took place in Manhattan County, New York. The marriage certificate is #6634.

    The couple had at least one child, a daughter they named Louisa. She was born on October 4, 1893 in Brooklyn, New York.

    Sometime before 1937, Louisa and John moved to Cumberland County, North Carolina. It was there on March 5, 1937 that Louisa passed away. She was buried in Cross Creek Cemetery #3 on March 7, 1937. Three years later her husband John would join her there.

    Gustave was the son of German immigrants Karl "Charles" Obenland and his wife, Friedericka Paulina Bernecker. Gustave had three sisters, Julia, Louisa and Frieda. He also had one brother, Charles.

    Gustave was born on July 21, 1879 in Brooklyn, New York. His father worked in a brewery and his mother took care of their home and family.

The couple had two children, a son named George born on December 22, 1902 and a daughter, Doris, born on August 4, 1915. Both children were born in Brooklyn.

    The 1910 Census shows the family living in Brooklyn. Gustave was 31, Jennie was 29 and George was 7 years old. Gustave was working as a house painter.

    Gustave was the contracting painter for the Brooklyn Heights Railroad. He also did side jobs, including painting the Brighton Beach Hotel and either Pimlico or Belmont Racetrack, among other things. The newspaper, The Brooklyn Eagle printed an article about Gustave's painting in their April 20, 1900 issue, which I've included in this memorial.

    According to his granddaughter, Gustave also owned a tavern on Neptune Ave. in Coney Island. There is an article in the Brooklyn Eagle where the tavern is mentioned. The article is about local candidates campaigning in the neighborhood. I've also included an excerpt from that article in this memorial.

    I have also found newspaper articles that mention Gustave as being a member of the Silver Star Social Club in Coney Island.

    On April 23, 1918, Gustave was admitted to the Brooklyn State Hospital. This information is on his death certificate.

    Gustave registered for the draft of WWI on September 12, 1918. His draft card says that he was disqualified from the draft due to "mental disease." At the time, Gustave was a patient at the Brooklyn State Hospital. On his draft card, Gustave was described as tall, stout, with brown hair and eyes.

    In the 1920 Census, Gustave was still a patient in the same hospital. He continued as an inpatient there until he passed away. As per his death certificate, which I have included in this memorial, Gustave died at the Brooklyn State Hospital in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. His death certificate in that county is #9627. His death certificate says that he died from pneumonia, with "general paralysis of the insane." (Whatever THAT means.)

    According to his death certificate, Gustave was buried on April 8, 1920 in the Evergreens Cemetery. The online records of the cemetery have a gap, which Gustave's death date falls into, so the plot number for Gustave was given to me by a clerk at The Evergreens Cemetery office.

    Charles was the son of Karl (Charles) and Friedericka Bernecker Obenland. He was born in New York City in October, 1871.

    He married Agnes Magee on October 25, 1893 in Manhattan County, New York. The marriage certificate is #13716. (Note: There is a marriage for a Joseph Lynn and a Delia Brady that has the same certificate number.)

    In several issues of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Charles is mentioned as being a member of a group called The Silver Star Social Club.

    The couple had two children, Agnes, born on May 4, 1894 and Charles A, born two years later.

    The 1900 Census lists the family living on Surf Avenue in Brooklyn. Charles was working as an inspector for the railway. (Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company, later the Brooklyn Manhattan Transit.) He worked out of the Culver Depot. The family actually lived at the depot for many years.

    This is right in the heart of Coney Island. Imagine growing up there like the Obenland children did! They lived and played right next to the Dreamland Amusement Park, the Iron Tower, the Iron Pier and just down the street from Steeplechase Park and Luna Park, with its amusements and thousands of electric lights.

    By 1920, the family had moved to 550 Surf Avenue. According to Google Earth, this is where the New York Aquarium now stands.

    Charles was killed while working in Brooklyn on June 19, 1929. An article regarding his death appeared in the evening edition of the Syracuse Herald on June 20, 1929: "Angered because he was prevented from boarding a congested street car with his wife and two children, a powerfully built man struck a blow to the jaw of Charles Obenland, veteran inspector at West Sixth Street and Surf Avenue, Coney Island, which killed him. The assailant and his family escaped in the confusion." Another, more informative article was found in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. Published on June 20, 1929, that article is included in this memorial. I have yet to find any information as to the identification of his assailant or if he was ever charged or prosecuted.

    The Obenland family was living at 1427 E. 4th Street when Charles was killed. This home, still standing, is about 20 blocks from the beach at Coney Island.

    Charles was buried on June 22, 1929 in the Evergreens Cemetery. Unfortunately, when it comes to this family, the cemetery records are inaccurate. Charles Louis is not listed on their website, but his wife and son are. They are listed under Obenland. I called the office and the clerk checked the plot book and in that they are all listed under Oberland. I went back and looked for Charles Louis on their website and he isn't listed under Oberland either!

    Adolph was the adopted son of Carl Christian Ferdinand Obenland. On Adolph's internment record at Union Cemetery, Adolph's mother is listed as Sophia Obenland. His father's name is just "Obenland." It's possible that Adolph was the illegitmate son of Sophia Obenland, and his father's name was unknown by the family here in the U.S. Adolph was born on October 9, 1882 in Wurttemburg, Germany. More research is needed. Adolph arrived in New York in October, 1887 on the steamship Rhein. He was 5 years old. He came to the United States with his adopted father. Accompanying Adolph and his father were Adolph's grandparents, Johann Jacob and Christine Rosine Foernsler Obenland. On October 26, 1890, Adolph's father remarried. The bride's name was Christiana Katharine Goeldenboth, another German immigrant. The couple gave Adolph 5 brothers and sisters. Arthur and another infant both died as babies. The other 3 siblings were sisters Katharine, Rose and Caroline. Adolph's grandfather and father both died while the the family was living in Howard County, Maryland. Adolph married Mary M. Dihle in Philadelphia in 1908. (Certificate #231606). Adolph and Mary had three children: George Russell, Alma and Carl Adolph. George died at the age of 7 years old from tetanus. Until recently, it was thought that Alma never married. However, an obituary from 1948 mentions Alma as Alma Baker. This information need further research. Adolph and Mary's son Carl married twice. Carl and Margaret had a daughter, Kathleen and a son, Carl Thomas. Margaret passed away in 1948. A year later, Carl married Helen Neil. The 1910 Census lists Adolph and Mary as living in Philadelphia, PA. Adolph is a real estate salesman. A search of the Philadelphia Inquirer starting in 1909 shows numerous ads placed by Adolph. Sometimes he worked by himself and other times he worked with a partner, as the ads show. An advertisement in 1910 shows Adolph as the agent of George McCraken, builder and owner. In 1911, he was a partner in Mahon & Obenland, LTD., who were "owners and builders." An ad in the May 11, 1913 issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer has Adolph as working as Obenland, Desmoine and Laise. The paper has many other articles that mention Adolph's wife and grandmother as participants in the buying and selling of Philadelphia real estate. In 1918, Adolph registered for the WWI draft. His address at the time was 6223 Clearview St. in Germantown, Pennsylvania. His occupation now is a traveling salesman for Carroll Dunham Smith Pharmaceuticals, based in New York City. According to the record, he was of medium height with a stout build. His eyes and hair were both brown. I recently found an FBI file for Adolph, dated in 1918, the same year he registered for the draft. Evidentally the government suspected him of being a German spy during WWI. The pages I've found are included on this memorial. Sometime bewteen 1918 and 1920, the family moved to Franklin County, Ohio. This included Adolph's grandmother, Christina. The 1920 Census lists them as renting a house at 155 W. Lakeview Ave., Columbus. Adolph was still a drug salesman. By 1930, Adolph and Mary owned their own home at 760 S. Remington Rd in Bexley, Ohio. The house was worth $9,000. When Adolph registered for the draft in WWII, he and Mary were then living in Cleveland, Ohio at 1889 E. 75th.     Katharine was born on April 5, 1895, the daughter of German immigrants Carl Christian Jacob Ferdinand Obenland and his wife, Christiana Katharine Goeldenboth. Prior to coming to the United States, Carl adopted his nephew, Adolph. Once here, Carl married Christiana in Maryland. They had Katharine, plus four other children. An unnamed child died as a baby, as did a son, Arthur. Katharine's other siblings were Rose and Caroline. Katharine's father, Carl, died in 1899. The 1900 Census lists Katharine living with her grandmother, Christine Rosine Foernsler Obenland, her mother Christiana, and sister Caroline. Sister Rose was living with her Aunt Rose and Uncle Arthur Hallwig at that time. In 1910, Katharine and her sister Rose were helping their mother, all working as laundresses. They were living in Lower Gwynedd, Montgomery County, Maryland. In 1922, Katharine married Oliver Perry Cadwallader. The wedding took place in Philadelphia. (Philadelphia certificate #458875.) The couple had at least one child that has been found, a daughter named Katharine. Katharine was born in about January, 1926. The 1930 Census lists the family living at 116 E. Maryland St. in Philadelphia. They own the home, which has a value of $6,400. Oliver was working as a house painter, while Katharine kept house. In 1942, when Oliver registered for the draft of WWII, he was then working for the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Oliver passed away in Pennsylvania in 1966. Some time later, Katharine moved to Maryland. According to the Social Security Death Index, Katharine passed away in September, 1985. Her last residence was in Silver Spring, Montgomery County, Maryland. Burial unknown

Rose was one of three daughters born to Carl and Christiana. Her sisters' names were Katharine and Caroline. Rose also had two brothers who died in infancy. In 1900, Rosa was living with her aunt, Rosa Goeldenboth Hallwig in Howard County, Maryland. The 1910 Census lists Rose living in Lower Gwynedd, Maryland, with her mother and sisters. Mother Christiana was a laundress, as were Rose and her sister Katharine. In 1918, Rose married Louis Franklin Finley. He worked as an iron worker. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Marriage Index lists their marriage certificate #411892 in 1919. However, Louis's WWI registration card lists Rose as his wife. This card was filled out in September, 1918. Rose and Louis had one son, Louis Franklin Finley, Jr. He was born on June 20, 1921 in Pennsylvania. The 1930 Census lists Rose as married, but the head of the household. Her husband Louis is not listed on the census as living with his family. I found him listed as an inmate at the Bastern State Penitentiary, in Skippack Township, Montgomery, County, Pennsylvania. Rose passed away in September, 1968 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. John George was a German immigrant, arriving in the U.S in 1892. His name in Germany was Johann Georg Kremer. Her mother, Louisa Pauline, was the child of German immigrants as well.

    Louisa married George Frederick Gahr in about 1920. The couple had at least one child, Emily, born on August 21, 1924 in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

    The 1930 Census lists the family at 305 Green Street in Fayettelville. They were renting for $35 per month. Louisa was a housewife and Fred was a salesman of "gentlemen's furnishings."

    Louisa passed away on December 16, 1964 at home in Fayetteville. She was buried three days later.

    Her middle name was either Frederike, Frederika or Frieda. Her birth certificate, as indexed on the German Genealogy Group lists her middle name as "Fre". That could mean any of the variations mentioned.

    Little Agnes's middle name was Brooklyn because she was the first child born in the new 31st ward in Brooklyn after some city consolidation had been done.

    Her birth was written up in the Kings County Journal at the time and then the story was repeated in the May 2, 1900 issue of the Brooklyn Eagle. It was reported that the Excise Commissioner, George B. Forrester, "felt so elated" that he gave the baby a $5 gold piece.

    Agnes had one brother, Charles, born two years after her. Agnes and her family lived in Brooklyn, on Coney Island. Her father was an inspector for the railroad while her mother took care of the home and family.

    Agnes and her parents and brother were living at 22 Surf Avenue during the 1910 Census. Her father worked at the Culver Depot, for the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company. The family also lived at the depot.

    This is right in the heart of Coney Island. Imagine growing up there like the Obenland children did! They lived and played right across the street from the Dreamland Amusement Park, the Iron Tower and the Iron Pier and just down the street from Steeplechase Park and Luna Park, with its many amusements and thousands of electric lights. It was an exciting place for a child, with throngs of people watching the parades up and down Surf Avenue.

    In about 1917, Agnes married Arthur Morrell Toppin.
    Arthur worked for as an office manager for a tugboat company. The couple had one child, a son they named Arthur Charles Toppin, born February 21, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York.

    In the 1930 Census, Arthur and Agnes were living at 1427 E. 4th Street in Brooklyn. They owned the property, which at that time was valued at $8,000.

    Agnes passed away on October 24, 1977 in Nassau County, New York. She was living in Wantagh at the time of her death. Her funeral services were at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hicksville, New York on October 26, 1977. She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn the next morning, the 27th.

    Charles was the son of Charles Obenland and his wife, Agnes Magee . He was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 9, 1896.

    Charles grew up on Coney Island, in Brooklyn, where his father was an inspector for the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company, which later became the Brooklyn Manhattan Transit. The family lived at the Culver Depot where Charles worked. On Surf Avenue, the depot was where all the trains arrived and departed on Coney Island.

    This is right in the heart of Coney Island. Imagine growing up there like the Obenland children did! They lived and played right across the street from the Dreamland Amusement Park, the Iron Tower and the Iron Pier and just down the street from Steeplechase Park and Luna Park, with its many amusements and thousands of electric lights. It was an exciting place for a child, with throngs of people watching the parades up and down Surf Avenue.

    On June 5, 1917, Charles registered for the draft for World War I. He was single and working for a Frankfort Co. at
    123 William Street. His draft card describes Charles as being tall, of medium build with brown eyes and hair.

    On June 19, 1918, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a list of men who were ordered by their draft board to Camp Upton. (page 1, column 4). Camp Upton is in Yaphank on Long Island and during WWI, was where new inductees were processed and trained. According to the list in the newspaper, Charles' local draft board was #57.

    An abstract of his WWI service states that Charles was inducted into the United States Army on June 23, 1918. His service number was 3201494. That same record shows that he served overseas from September 8, 1918 to June 27, 1919. Charles was Honorably Discharged on July 2, 1919.

    By 1920, the family had moved to 550 Surf Avenue. According to Google Earth, this is where the New York Aquarium now stands.

    In the 1930 Census, Charles was still single. During this census, Charles and his mother were living with Charles' sister, Agnes and her husband, Arthur Toppin on Coney Island, at the house his parents lived in when his father was killed. The address was 1427 E. 4th St.

    On August 7, 1937, Charles married Jessie Emma Pilgrim. The wedding took place in Kings County, New York, probably in Brooklyn, maybe even on Coney Island. As of this writing, I haven't found any children born to the couple.

    Charles died on March 22, 1942. His cause of death is unknown until I receive his death certificate. (#6179) His funeral was held on March 24, 1942 at E.C Waldeck's Home For Funerals.

    He was buried the day after his funeral in The Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn. (Burial number 334150.)

    As of this revision, on August 3, 2014, I have no idea what happened to his wife after his death.
