    Notes:

Mary Malarkey was born Mary Joyce in Ireland. (Another variation of the last name is Joice.) Her parents are unknown at this time. And, I haven't been able to find where Mary was born. Unfortunately, death records in the county weren't recorded until 1905 and church records don't list the parents' names nor the place of birth. The exact date of her birth is not known, however, the parish records say she was 62 at the time of her death. Given that, she was probably born in 1843. Her passenger list in 1864 states that she was 20, which would make her birth year at about 1843 or 1844. The 1900 Census says that she was born in January of 1843 or 1845.

Mary arrived in the port of Philadelphia on April 20, 1864. She had sailed from Liverpool on the Tonawanda. John Mullarkey was also on the ship. Whether he and Mary had known each other in Ireland or whether they met on the crossing, we just don't know. Also on the voyage was a Patrick Joyce and his family. Patrick was 40 years old at the time. He is the right age for Mary's father, but Mary was not traveling with that family. She is listed alone.

John and Mary were united in marriage on Feb. 4, 1867 in Ashland, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The witnesses were Jacob Munley and Mary Joyce. (Probably her mother or sister-in-law)

John and Mary had 9 children: Catherine Ada (1867), Marguerite Ellen (1869), John Joseph, (1872), Harry Francis Sr.(1874), Lauretta (AKA Bridget) Veronica (1876), Marion Madeline (1879), Anna Veronica (1882), Rosebud Violet (1885) and Theresa (1889). Another child, Bridget, is listed in the parish register as also being born in 1876. I don't think she could be Laura's twin who did not survive because in the 1880 census, Laura isn't mentioned (when she should have been) but a Bridget is. It seems as if Bridget changed her name to Lauretta when she left home. Whether is was a legal name change is unknown.

Mary's husband worked in the coal mines in the area and later may have been a shopkeeper while Mary took care of the home and family. They lived in the "Wild Cat" or "Wild Cat Run" area of Girardville.

Mary died Nov. 1, 1905. Saint Joseph's parish records say that she died of "neuralgia of the heart." She was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Girardville after a High Mass on Nov. 4, 1905. These records state that the costs were: Lot $20, High Mass and Burial $11, Fence $2, Grave digging $4.50, for a total of $37.50

Mary's Find A Grave Memorial number is 21826545.

    Notes:

Anna Veronica Mullarkey was born in Girardville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were John and Mary Mullarkey (nee Joyce). There are quite a few ways of spelling the name Mullarkey: Mullarkey, Malarky, Malarkey, Mallarkey, etc.) Anna was baptized on April 2, 1882 at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Girardville. On the baptismal records her last name is spelled Mullarkey. Anna's Godparents were Michael Kilker and Bridgett Kilker.

Anna's parents were both born in Ireland. Anna was one of 8 daughters and two sons born to John and Mary.

The 1900 Census showed Anna living in Philadelphia at 634 S. 16th St. Her sisters Marguerite and Lauretta, and a brother, Joseph also lived there. (We think Joseph might be the son on one of the sisters, but we have no proof as of 2008.) Anna and her sisters were all listed as dressmakers. They had 5 lodgers and one servant, Gracie Plumb, a black woman.

In Anna's trunk, her granddaughter found a large mother of pearl button. Scraped on the back of it is this: "Boston '96 Love my love shall ever be thine." Did Anna scratch this on a button, intending to give it to a beau? Or did one of her admirers give it to her? I guess we'll never know.

Anna married Gustave Franklin Obenland on August 30, 1904 in Girardville, Pennsylvania. They had one child, a son they named Harold Edwin, born on July 3, 1905 in Birmingham, Alabama.

Anna and Gus moved around quite a bit during their marriage. Records show them living in Birmingham, Alabama, Shreveport, Lousiana, Ft. Worth, Texas, Everett, Washington, Goldfield, Nevada and in California.

The date of Anna's divorce from Gustave is unknown as of 2007. We do know that after the divorce, Anna lived in Richmond, Ccalifrnia and took in boarders.

Sometime before 1947, Anna moved to Inglewood, Los Angeles County, California. I would assume the move was prompted by her desire to be closer to her son, Harold. The 1947 birth announcement for Michael, Anna's first grandchild, shows she was living in Inglewood, in care of her sister, Lauretta. When Lauretta died in 1949, Anna stayed on in Inglewood.

I can remember going to her house in the 1950's and eating Campbell's Chicken Gumbo soup. I also remember her phone was an old crank one. She had quite a collection of beer steins on her dining room buffet. I can still see in my mind the old crank-up phonograph with the large horn in her bedroom.

As an interesting side note, in the terms of Anna's divorce from Gus, she was awarded monthly alimony. When Gus died, he owed Anna $7,750. Anna was never able to collect anything from Gus's estate, because a relative of Gus's, Gus's new wife (?) (No record has been found of a marriage.) and her friend smuggled Gus's money and other valuable items out of the state of Washington and into California and Idaho. In return, the relative and his wife were given Gus's house in Pomeroy, Washington. A person with intimate knowledge of it all signed a sworn affidavit to that effect.

Anna was either living in Long Beach or Inglewood, California at the time of her death. She is buried in the same grave as her son and surrounded by her sisters Lauretta, Rose, Theresa, Marion and Marion's husband, Hector Gillis.

Anna left behind one son, Harold. She also had three grandchildren, Michael Edwin, Cecilia Ann and Laurie Lynn.

    Notes:

Marguerite Malarky was the 2nd oldest child of John and Mary (Joyce) Mullarkey. Marguerite was born in Ashland, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania on September 9, 1869. She was baptized 3 days later at St Joseph's Church in Ashland by Rev John J O'Reillly. Her sponsors were Edward Joyce and Mary L. Joyce. Edward and Mary L. must have been relatives of Marguerite's mother, Mary.

There are several questions regarding Marguerite. I think all of them can be explained by a bit of vanity, maybe some good business sense and in one instance, a sign of the times.

The birth date above is from Marguerite's Certificate of Baptism. Marguerite's Internment Order for her burial states her birth year as 1873. I've found that over her life, she seemed to use a birth date that made her about five years younger than she really was.

In the 1900 and 1910 Federal Census, her mother is listed as being born in Ireland. Beginning in 1920, Marguerite said her mother was born in France. Did she do this because she felt that would make her business more successful? Would her skills seem more glamorous if her mother had learned the trade in France rather than Ireland?

Marquerite is listed in the 1900 Census as living at 634 S. 16th Steet, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with her sisters Anna and Lauretta. Also living with them was a brother, Joseph, born in about 1888. Strangely, there is no record of a brother named Joseph being born in the family.

There is no record of Marguerite ever marrying. In fact, her Interment Order shows her name at death to be Marguerite Malarkey. However,in some newspaper articles, Marguerite is referred to as Mrs.

I found Marguerite listed in many Indianapolis city directories from 1906-1945. In 1909, she is listed as the widow of Fred Malarky. In 1912, he is listed as Fredrick. Marguerite listed herself as the widow of Joseph Malarkey in the 1935 directory.

In the 1900 Census, Marguerite is listed as single, and Joseph was her brother. Beginning in the 1910 Census, she is a widow. In 1940, she is living with Joseph and his wife and was listed as his mother.

A letter from a Joseph Arthur Malarky living in Phoenix, Arizona in 1977 states in part, "...my grandmother Marguerite...." Joseph Arthur was the son of Joseph Malarky, listed as both brother and later son to Marguerite.

I believe that Joseph was Marguerite's son, born out-of-wedlock.

According to her niece, Mary Malarkey Starner, Marguerite left Philadelphia for Chicago around the turn of the century. She became a dress designer with the exclusive establishment of Couturier, Inc., located on Michigan Blvd. The company was owned by the brother and sister team of Katherine and Harry Strickland.

In about 1903 or 1904, Marguerite left the Strickland firm to accept a position of head designer and manager of the Custom Made Dept. of H.P. Wasson Company in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was one of the leading department stores in the city.

Katherine Strickland and Marguerite remained close friends throughout the years. They traveled, usually in July and August, through Europe before attending the fashion shows in Paris in September. There are passenger lists showing Marguerite made trips to Europe after 1900. Passenger lists show she left Liverpool for New York at the end of her trip in 1904. According to her sister, Anna, Marguerite visited her sister Catherine (Kit) in Ireland, the first time being in 1904. This is perhaps why Marguerite sailed for home from Liverpool, instead of Cherbourg, France, like she did in 1906, 1907, 1908, 1910, and 1911. If there are records of her travels for the missing years above, I haven't located them as yet.

During one of these trips, Marguerite and her friend Katherine Strickland attended the "Passion Play" in Oberammergau, which is presented once every 10 years.

After WWI started, the European trips ended. The top Paris designers held their shows in the spring and fall in New York City.

In 1915, the last member of the Wasson family died and the store was sold. The new owners wanted Marguerite to stay on, but she had other plans. She opened her own business and continued to operate it until about 1939 or 1940. At that time the business became less profitable due to the impact "Ready to Wear" had made on the "custom made" establishments after WWI.

The Malarky establishment not only enjoyed the most elite clientèle of Indianapolis, but also of the state. A client of hers, Mrs. Charles (Harriette) Anthony of Muncie, Indiana made headlines by wearing diamonds in her heels to the Inaugural Ball of President Taft. Her gown was designed and made by Marguerite.

In 1913, Marguerite's sister-in-law (brother John Joseph's wife) passed away in New York City. The couple had two sons and a daughter. That daughter, Mary Malarkey Starner, wrote to me, "I might add that I was sent out to Indianapolis to what I thought was to be a visit with Aunt Marguerite whom I had never seen. As it was, it was to be a "permanent" visit which took place about 3 weeks after my mother died. I shall always be extremely grateful to her and her family for giving me the opportunity to enjoy a normal home life besides many other advantages in life. Without her kindness and generosity, I, too, might have been placed in a foster home." Evidentially, Mary's father didn't feel like he could take care of the three children after his wife died. The two boys were sent to foster homes and Mary was sent to live with Marguerite. Mary was 14, David was 12 and John Joseph Jr was only 8 years old at that time.

After Marguerite closed her business she went to California for about a year, visiting with her sisters Anna, Laura, Tay, Marion and Rose as they were living in California at that time. She returned to Indianapolis in about 1941 and lived with her son Joe and his family until her death in 1954. According to her death certificate, she died of "carcinomatosis, probably pulmonary." She was also suffering from arteriosclerosis. Marguerite's address at the time of her death was 4602 Guilford, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Marguerite was buried on April 26, 1954 at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Her plot is Lot 386, Section 66, Grave 1.

Her Find a Grave memorial number is 21853580.

    Notes:

Catherine was the oldest child of John Mullarkey his wife, Mary Joyce. She was baptized at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Ashland, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania on Nov. 27, 1967 by Father John J O'Reilly. Her sponsors were Peter Joyce and Mary Joyce. (Brother and sister-in-law? Cousin and his wife?)

Her family called her Kit or Kitty.

Catherine married Peter Aloysius Sinnott on Nov. 2, 1900 at the Church of the Transfiguration in Manhattan, New York City. One of the witnesses was a Mary Joyce. This could have been her mother, aunt, sister-in-law or cousin.

I received an abstract of their marriage certificate from the Church of the Transfiguration in 1979. I wasn't sure this was the correct document, as Catherine's birth place is listed as Shelby County, Tennessee. Her age is also off by nine years. However, the middle name is the same. The mother's maiden name is the same. The groom's name is the same. The groom's birthplace and parent's names are the same. His birth date is off by 5 years, but, on the marriage certificate, Peter's mother's maiden name was Katherine Breen. The Sinnots are buried in Dublin with an Ellen Breen. Could this be one of Peter's relatives? The date and place of the marriage is the same as what Catherine's nephew, Howard, had prior to my receipt of the certificate from the church. So, I have no doubt this is the correct marriage certificate.

Sometime prior to his marriage, Peter inherited the "Abbey of Enniscorthy," in County Wexford, so he and Catherine moved to Ireland. I found Peter's "Certificate of Registration of American Citizen" that he had to complete while in Ireland. It gives his date and place of birth. It also listed his wife and his two children who were living at the time. The paperwork stated Peter and his wife left the United States for Ireland on November 3, 1900. Note that this was one day after their marriage. They traveled to Enniscorthy, County Wexford, where they stayed until June, 1904. They arrived in Dublin on July 1 of that year. The Consular Certificate said they were in Dublin to settle an estate in the Chancery Court. This must have been the estate of the relative who had willed the Abbey to Peter.

While in Enniscorthy, they at least two children. This area needs more research. According to Anna, Catherine's sister, her notes say that their first child, born in County Wexford, was a daughter whom they named Catherine. Anna's notes also state that the little girl died there as well. Catherine's nephew, Howard Zellers, wrote in 1977 of "...a son Peter who died while they lived at the Abbey and was buried on the Abbey Estate. At the time of his death he was about two years of age."

On February 5, 2017, I emailed St. Aidan's Cathedral in Enniscorthy, asking for information on the births of the children born there to Peter A Sinnott and Catherine Malarkey. I received a response from a gentleman named Hugo Kelly. He had researched the baptismal records and found only two children: Catherine Eleanor, born on September 27, 1901 and Nicholas John, born November 18, 1903. Both were baptized in St. Aiden's. The was no mention of a child named Peter, nor was there a death recorded for Catherine Eleanor. Since the family moved to Dublin in 1904, she might have died there. However, Anna Malarkey Obenland, her aunt wrote that she died in Wexford. She is probably buried on the Abbey grounds there.

Nicholas was born March 18, 1903. He died on May 4, 1925 at the age of 22 and is buried with his family in Dean's Grange Cemetery in Dublin. Family lore says that he was imprisoned during the Easter Rising in 1916 and died either in prison or after being released. This doesn't sound correct, as Nicholas would have only been 13 at the time. These is an outside chance that he could have taken a small part in the rebellion, but I don't know how to find that out.

Eleanor was born on December 19, 1909 in Dublin. Unfortunately, she died when she was 10 years old, on Aug. 30, 1920. Eleanor is also buried with her parents in Dean's Grange Cemetery.

The 1901 Irish Census lists Peter and Catherine at 46.2 Templeshannon St, in Enniscorthy. This was a hotel, categorized as "1st class." The couple occupied one room.

Catherine's nephew also relates, "After having lived at the Abbey some time the Irish Government confiscated their estate under the Irish Land Reform Act. They were to be compensated for their land in the amount of about forty thousand pounds. Actually they received very little except for a small pension. After her husband's death, Katherine continued to receive the pension until her death. Katherine under dower rights only had a life estate following Peter's death."

The "Irish Reform Act" mentioned above was probably the Land Purchase Act in 1909. According to Wikipedia, the Act "extended the 1903 Act by allowing for the compulsory purchase of tenanted farmland by the Land Commission, but fell far short in its financial provisions." This sounds to me like the government ran out of money. Thus, as Howard said, Peter and Catherine never received all of their proceeds. Also note the word, "compulsory". Howard used the word "confiscated" but they mean the same thing. The Sinnotts were forced to give up their land.

The Ireland Census of 1911 shows Peter and Catherine living with Nicholas and Eleanor at 29.3 Sandwith St., St Mark's Parish, Trinity Ward, Dublin, Ireland. The four members of the family were all living in one room. It states that they had had three children, with two alive at that time. With this information, we can assume the son Peter must have been just a myth in the family. That census says that Peter was a "landed proprietor" and a landlord. The family was Roman Catholic.

Sometime in the early 1900's, Kit's sister, Marguerite visited the family in Ireland. It is said that she found them in "dire straights." Kit was dressed quite shabbily so Marguerite left most of her clothes with her sister when she left. Since Marguerite was a dressmaker and was in Europe for the fashion shows, the clothes must have been absolutely wonderful.

At the time Eleanor, Nicholas and Peter died, the family was living at 38 Denzile St. in Dublin. On 11 March 2014, I checked Google Earth. At that time, there was no Denzile St. There was, however, a Denzille Lane.

Kit died at the age of 80 years old on Jan. 25, 1947. At the time of her death she was living at 43 Fenian St. in Dublin. She was buried in Dean's Grange Cemetery in Dublin, grave 25 - F3- North. Her grave is unmarked.

Catherine is spelled with a "C" on her baptismal record in Pennsylvania and burial records at Dean's Grange Cemetery. On her marriage record and on Peter's Counselar Registration Certificate, her first name is spelled with a "K".

On their marriage records, Peter's last name is spelled "Sinnott." On his, Catherine's, and Eleanor's burial records the last name is spelled "Synott." However, Nicholas's burial record spells the name Sinnott.

Catherine's Find A Grave memorial number is 21867119.

    Notes:

John Joseph Malarkey was the son of John J. and Mary Malarkey (nee Joyce). He was born in Girardville, PA on April 7, 1872. Like most of his family, he entered the world with his last name spelled Mullarkey. However, after the birth of his second son, John, the spelling was changed to Malarkey.

John's father was a coal miner and his mother kept house for their large family. John and his siblings grew up in Girardville, PA. John had one brother, Henry and 8 sisters: Bridget (Lauretta), Theresa, Marguerite, Marion, Anna, Catherine and Rosebud. His sisters called him Jack.

John married Mary Ellen Meade, of Limerick, Ireland on July 20, 1898. They were married in New York City. Mary Ellen's parents were John and Johanna Meade, of Limerick, Ireland.

John and Mary Ellen were the parents of 4 children, two boys and two girls. Their first child, a daughter named Mary, was born on May 16, 1899. On Aug. 22, 1901, their son David Joseph was born. A second son, John J. was born Jan. 21, 1905. Theresa was the 4th child of John and Mary Ellen. She was born on Oct. 26, 1909. Unfortunately, she died when she was 8 months old, in July of 1910.

All of John and Mary Ellen's children were born in New York City. They were all baptized in St. Joseph's Church, located on Washington Place and Sixth Ave. in New York City.

On his daughter Mary's birth certificate, John's occupation was listed as an engineer.

Mary Ellen Malarkey died on Oct. 3, 1913. About three weeks after her death, John sent his daughter Mary to live with his sister, Marguerite in Indianapolis, Indiana. The two boys, John and David, were sent to live with foster families.

John's brother, Henry Francis (Harry), his wife and 3 boys were living in New York City at the time of Mary Ellen's death. Today we wonder if John couldn't take care of his children after his wife died, why didn't his brother Harry and wife Julia take them in?

John Malarkey died about 5 years after his wife. We have no record of what John was doing during the time between his wife's death and his death.

John died of tuberculosis at St. Joseph's Hospital, in the Bronx in New York City on March 7, 1919. He was buried two days later in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, New York. (Plot Section 43 Range 8 Plot B Grave 5)

    Notes:

Harold Obenland was born in Birmingham, Alabama on July 3, 1905. His parents were Gustave Franklin Obenland and Anna Veronica Malarkey. (Also spelled at times Malarky, Mullarkey, etc.) Anna's sister, Lauretta Malarkey (Laura) was Harold's Godmother.

Harold had a child out-of-wedlock, Donald Lee Obenland, who was born July 15, 1925 in Oakland, California. The mother's name was Mary Jane Flaugher, as per the birth certificate. For 30 years, Harold's daughter, Cecilia, has searched for Donald. Please see his memorial for Donald's story.

Harold married Mildred Lovena Whaley Smalley on March 24, 1935. They later divorced.

On June 30, 1940, he married Geraldine Cecilia Huston, from Los Angeles. They were married in Yuma, AZ. Two children were born to them: Michael Edwin Obenland (11/19/1947) and Cecilia Ann Obenland (4/23/1949). Harold and Geraldine later divorced, which was final on March 3, 1953. However, they had been living apart for some time prior to that.

On Oct. 23, 1954, Harold married Dorothy Fern Watson in Lakewood, California. They had one child, Laurie Lynn Obenland, born in 1956. Their divorce was final in either 1958 or 1959.

Harold went to work in 1957 for North American Aviation, Inc in their Autonetics Division. On June 14, 1957 he completed a "Department ofDefense Personnel Security Questionaire." (Form DD48) He also signed Form DD48-1, "Certificate of Nonaffiliation with Certain Organizations." Listed on this form were more than a page (in small print!), listing organizations the Attorney General had "designated has having interests in conflict with those of the United States." This questionaire also states, "Security classification of materials or information employee will have access to: SECRET."

The DD 48 says, "Security classification of materials or information employee will have access to: SECRET" and "Contract number under which the employee is to be cleared: NAVAHO AF-33 (600) - 28469." I couldn't find much about this contract on the internet. What I did find was that it pertained to "Guided Missile Project MX-770, worked on by North American Aviation, Missile Development Division in Downey, CA in the mid to late 1950's." However, Wikipedia states, "Officially, the program was canceled on 13 July 1957, after the first four launches ended in failure. In reality the program was obsolete by mid-1957 as the first Atlas ICBM began flight tests in June and the Jupiter and Thor IRBMs were showing great promise. These ballistic missiles however would not have been possible without the liquid fuel rocket engine developments accomplished in the Navaho program. The launch of the Soviet Satellite Sputnik in October 1957 only finished Navaho as the Air Force shifted its research money into ICBMs. But the technologies developed for the Navaho were reused in 1957 for the development of the AGM-28 Hound Dog, a nuclear cruise missile which entered in production in 1959."

However, a book, "US Air Force Tatical Missiles, 1949-1969" by George Mindling and Robert Bolton, states on pages 57-58 that the MX-770 project produced the SM-64 Navajo Missile. I don't know for how long it was in use. I do know that Harold worked for North American Aviation until his retirement, which was probably about 1970.

Harold's last wife was Myrtle Ann Thompson. They were married in 1959. Their marriage announcement was in the Los Angeles Times on Dec. 13, 1959. They were still married and living in Weldon, CA when Harold died.

He was first buried in Kern River Valley Cemetery. Later, Myrtle had him moved to Holy Cross Cemetery where his mother and Aunts are buried. I don't know why Myrtle did that...maybe so she and her last husband could be buried together.

Harold was a jeweler like his father for a time and even owned a store on Baldwin Ave. in Arcadia, CA while married to Geraldine. Later, he worked for North American Aviation, in Long Beach, CA. Harold was an avid camper and fisherman and spent many vacations in the Sierra Nevada mountains. And yes, he was a ladies man! His cousin Mary called him a "Vagabond Lover."

NOTE for Oct 11, 2012: I've finally uncovered Marion Flaugher and her son, Donald's stories. I'm not too keen about my Dad right now. I'm disgusted that he was 20 and got a 16 year old girl pregnant. Did he know about the pregnancy? Did Marion tell him? I wish I knew.

NOTE: In August, 1961, Harold filed for divorce from Myrtle, but they later reconciled. (The Independent; Long Beach, CA, page 54, column 3).

    Notes:

First, let me state that there are several ways of spelling the name Malarkey...Malarky, Mullarky are but a few. Joe spelled his name without the "e", therefore, that is how I'm spelling the name here.

There is a discrepancy as to Joe's year of birth. His WWI registration card says he was born in 1889. The 1900 Census says he was born in 1888. However, his WWII registration says he was born in 1891. Since his tombstone says 1889, that's the year I'm using.

During the 1900 Census, Joe was living with Marguerite, Laura and Anna Malarkey. Their address was 634 16th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Marguerite and her two sisters were dressmakers.

That census states that Joe was the brother of the girls. However, his son stated in a letter to me that Marguerite was his grandmother. This would make Joseph Marguerite's son. Other clues point to that being true, including the recently released 1940 Census, where Marguerite is living with Joseph and is listed as his mother. Joe was born in Girardville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. On FamilySearch.org, there is an abstract of his marriage record. It states that he was the son of "Margaret Ellen Malarky and John Joseph Malarky." She could have married another member of the Malarky family, a second cousin, perhaps. However, I have not found a marriage record. And remember, in the 1900 Census, Margeurite is listed as single and Joseph is her brother.

Sometime between 1900 and 1913, Marguerite and her son moved first to Chicago and then to Indianapolis, Indiana. Marguerite continued her dressmaking business while Joe attended Manual Training High School, which later became the Charles E Emmerich Manual Training High School. He graduated in 1908 or 1909. During high school, Joe was a member of the basketball team, playing the position of forward.

Two references mention that he was enrolled at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. A letter from Howard Zellers, Rose Malarkey's son, stated that Joe graduated from Purdue. On the Purdue website, I found several pictures of Joe. Two are of him on the basketball team, of which he was a star member, I might add. Another is the picture of the "All Class Basketball Team" of 1911. Joe is wearing his class sweater, that of 1914.

Several newspaper articles at the time mention Joe. In the Indianapolis Star on May 22, 1913, it was reported, "Joe Malarky, Purdue's star forward, was today elected Captain of next year's basketball team."

Unfortunately, he was not able to fulfill that role. The "1914 Debris," the Purdue yearbook, states on page 217, "At the absence of Captain-elect Malarky from school, "Ollie" was chosen to lead the Boilermaker Quintet thru the 1914 season." This would have been Joe's Senior year, but he is not listed in the yearbook. Whether he ever received his degree is unknown as of this writing.

While at Purdue, Joe was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. The "1913 Debris" listed him as being on the "Board of Control," which had something to do with the Athletic Department. That same year he was a member of the Junior Class organization, as the PAA Representative. (Whatever that was!)

After Purdue, Joe continued playing basketball. According to several articles in the Indianapolis Star in November, 1915, Joe had recently joined the Em-Roe basketball team. After doing some research, I found this was a semi-pro team sponsored by the Em-Roe Sporting Goods Store in Indianapolis, Indiana. Their website says this about the team, "Much of the history of the store has been woven about the exploits of the famous Em-Roe basketball team which reigned supreme in the Midwest semi-pro basketball circles for almost a decade. Members of the rim said the team, which was organized in 1913, played through five consecutive seasons without losing a single game and won 118 consecutive contests in those five years. The team became known nationally. The team played throughout the mid-west until 1924 when it was disbanded. " A book is available regarding the semi-pro teams in Indiana during that time, "Pioneers of the Hardwood," by Todd Gould.

The Indianapolis Star on November 13, 1915 ran an article on the Em-Roe team, saying in part, "Joe Malarkey (sic) a former Manual star and later Captain of the Purdue quintet...was chosen for the All Western basket ball team in 1913."

Joe's WWI Draft Registration says that he had military training at Purdue. Maybe he was in the ROTC, if that was available at the time. That document states that he was tall and slender, with blue eyes and dark hair.

On New Year's day, 1914, Joe married a young lady named Edith Elizabeth Elliott. The wedding took place at the bride's parents' home in Indianapolis. I have included a newspaper announcement of their marriage in this memorial.

This announcement states that after the wedding, Joe and Edith were moving to California to live. They eventually did move to California, as that is where they died. But from their marriage until after the 1940 Census, they lived in Indianapolis.

In June, 1917. Joe registered for the draft of WWI. He, Edith and their 14 month old child were living at 3115 College Ave., in Indianapolis. The child mentioned was their son, Joseph Arthur Malarky, born March 11, 1916 in Indianapolis. At the time, Joe was workiing for the Wildhack Company as an automobile salesman. He is described on his registration card as being tall and slender, with blue eyes and dark hair.

On October 10, 1919, Joe and Edith welcomed a daughter to their family. They named their little girl Janet Marguerite Malarky. Joe continued to work for the Wildhack Company until 1924. He then opened a dealership with WH Ehrich, known as the Ehrich-Malarky Company. Advertisements in the Indianapolis Star show that they were chosen in to sell the REO. According to the newspaper, the REO dealership formally opened the week of December 14, 1924. The address was 927 N. Meridian, in Indianapolis.

Joe's WWII draft card, which he filled out in 1942, states that he and Edith were living at 5269 Park Ave., in Indianapolis. Their children were 23 and 26 years old at that time. It's unclear at this time whether either of the children were still living with their parents. Joe was working at Curtis Wright Corporation, an aeronautical company, located at 222 West Morris Street, in Indianapolis

We haven't found any information regarding a marriage of Joseph Arthur Malarky. Janet Marguerite Malarky married Charles McHugh. They had no children.

Sometime between 1955 and 1960, Joe and Edith finally moved to California. I found them listed in the city directory in 1960 living at 352 Reeves Dr. in Beverly Hills. Joe's aunts, Tay and Marion and Marion's husband Hector Gillis, lived nearby.

Joe passed away in 1965 and Edith in 1966. His cause of death was arteriosclerotic heart disease. Both Joe and Edith are buried in Forest Lawn in Glendale, California. Joe's plot is in the Garden of the Ascension, Lot 7810, Space 1.

His Find a Grave memorial number is 28796221.

    • Residence: 2 Apr 1911, St Mark's Parish, Trinity Ward, County Dublin. Dublin, Ireland; 29 Sandwith St; Age: 8; Relation to Head of House: Son

    Notes:

Nicholas was born March 18, 1903 in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland. He was the son of Peter Aloysius Sinnott and his wife, Catherine Malarkey, who were both United States citizens of recent Irish descent.

The 1911 Irish Census lists Nicholas living with his parents and sister, Eleanor, at 29 Sandwith St, in Dublin. The census says that all four lived in one room.

Nicholas died on May 4, 1925 at the age of 22 and is buried with his family in Dean's Grange Cemetery in Dublin, #25-F3-North. The cemetery records say that he died at 38 Denzile St. On 11 Mar 2014, I checked Google Earth, but could not find a Denzile St. I did, however, find a Denzille Lane.

Family lore says that he was imprisoned during the Easter Rising in 1916 and died either in prison or after being released. This doesn't sound correct, as Nicholas would have only been 13 at the time. However, these is an outside chance that he could have taken a small part in the rebellion, but I don't know how to find that out.

Unfortunately, Eleanor died when she was only 10 years old. She was buried in Dean's Grange Cemetery, where later the rest of her family would be buried. Her grave at 25-F3-North, is unmarked.

    Notes:

Michael's parents were Geraldine Cecilia Obenland (nee Huston) and Harold Edwin Obenland. Michael was born at Cedar's of Lebanon Hospital (now Cedar's Sinai). He was baptized at Holy Angels Catholic Church, in Arcadia, CA on March 7, 1948. His Sponsors were his great aunt, Marion Gillis and her husband, Hector.

Michael's parents divorced in 1953, however, they had been living apart for at least one year prior to that. Michael grew up in Arcadia, Los Angeles County, CA with his mother and sister. The two children were taken care of by their maternal grandmother, Emma Cecilia Price, who lived with them until her death in 1962.

Michael was married twice. First to Sherry Chrisinger on Dec. 12, 1970 in Monrovia, CA. They had two children before divorcing: Tracey Dionne Obenland (1971-2011) and Julie Marie Obenland.

He later married Rosanna Jean Krajcik. Two children were born in this marriage: Marcia Marie Obenland, born in Los Angeles on March 12, 1978. Another child was found on the California Birth Index at Ancestry.com as being born to them on December 21, 1976, in Los Angeles. She is listed there as both Lisa A. Obenland and Lisa A. Krajcik. However, the state of California has said they have no record of this birth. Maybe she was adopted, as Michael and Rosanna had many problems in life. Michael and Rosanna were divorced in Los Angeles County, CA. Date unknown.

On Oct. 19, 1992, Michael was interviewed by the Los Angeles Times regarding panhandlers. He said, "I'm manic-depressive. Both my wife (Rosanna) and I have been in many mental institutions. We have both had electric shock treatments over and over. We weren't born this way on purpose. My wife and I are both on disability. We each get $595 per month. Our rent, $597, takes half of that. Soon the state will cut us back $35 each per month. We could end up homeless again, like we were for a year and a half. Governor Wilson needs to be recalled. He doesn't care about the poor. See this brace I'm wearing for my spine? I need steroid shots, but they're not covered on Medicare. I need tranquilizers for my nerves, but they're not covered by Medicare. I've thought sometimes of suicide. Things are getting worse. About five months ago, I started getting up at 3 AM to go out with a flashlight to get bottles and stuff out of trash cans. It's so shabby everywhere. I'd say one-eighth of the people I ask give me money. The most I ever got? About $5. But mostly it's chump change, just enough so I can take my wife to Denny's for an iced tea or something."

Michael died at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital of pneumonia, a complication of COPD. His sister, Cecilia, did not find out about his death until a year or so later. She picked up his ashes from LA County on May 17, 2006, where they now reside on a shelf in her home next to their mother's ashes.

    Other Events:

    • Name: Donald Lee Oberland
    • Last Residence: Oct 2008, Monrovia, Los Angeles County, California, USA; 612 W Foothill Blvd. Apt C

    Notes:

Donald was the son of Marion Flaugher (Mary Jane on Donald's Birth Certificate) and Harold Edwin Obenland. He was born out-of-wedlock on July 15, 1925 in Oakland, California.

Donald's real last name was Obenland. However, sometime during his life, probably when he was a child, the name was misspelled and inadvertently changed to Oberland. This is the name he used throughout his life. (This happens sometimes with Obenlands.)

I'm Donald's half sister; we had the same father. In 1979 I sent to Sacramento, California for birth records of any children born to my father, Harold, and his first wife, Mildred. This was a shot in the dark, because I didn't really think my father had any more children. As far as I knew, Harold's only children were myself, my brother Michael and half-sister Laurie. Imagine my suprise when I received a birth certificate for a child born to my father and Mary Jane Flaugher, a totally different woman!

This birth certificate was for a son, Donald, who was the illegitimate child of my father, Harold Edwin Obenland. The certificate states that Harold was a resident of Richmond, California and his age was 17. Harold did live in Richmond at that time, but he would have just turned 20 years old a couple of weeks prior to Donald's birth. Maybe they lied about his age for legal reasons...Mary Jane was only 16 years old when Donald was born.

Since that birth certificate arrived in 1979, I had been looking for Donald, to no avail. It was almost like he had dropped off the face of the earth. I even called the Vital Records Department in Sacramento, California and cajoled the lady into at least telling me if he had been adopted in this state. She indicated that he had never been adopted, not even in another state. I then started looking for a Donald Flaugher, but never found him under that name either. At that point, I figured his mother might have gotten married and Donald had used his step-father's name even though not formally adopted.

On February 6, 2009, I was researching another Obenland on the Social Security Death Index and there I found my long-lost brother listed. He had just died 3 1/2 months previously. Interestingly, his last residence is listed as Monrovia, California. What makes that interesting is that Monrovia is the city adjacent to Arcadia, where my brother and I grew up.

Donald died on October 23, 2008 in Arcadia, California.

On June 10, 2009, I received Donald's death certificate. I was hoping that the informant listed on the certificate would be either his wife or an adult child, with whom I could make contact. Unfortunately, just about everything on the certificate was "unknown." In fact, the coronor's office had been investigating, looking for a member of the family. The only new information gleaned from the death certificate besides his last residence is the fact that Donald's middle name was Lee. As you can see from his birth certificate, no middle name was listed.

UPDATE #1: After visiting with Donald's roommates on June 12, 2009, I learned that Donald went to the Arcadia Public Library on a regular basis. He would sit in the library and read cowboy books. He didn't drive, so one of his roommates drove him and picked him up later. On the day Donald died, he was waiting on the bus bench outside the library. When his ride showed up, she found him dead on the bench. He had suffered a heart attack. His death certificate states he suffered from arteriosclerotic cardio vascular disease.

His roommates also told me that Donald's mother took off with a man and left Donald to be raised by his
grandfather. I don't know how long he stayed with his grandfather, because Donald also said that he never knew his family. Maybe he was with his grandfather for a short time and then raised by strangers.

As per his roommates, Donald never married and never had any children.

I was lucky to receive a photo of Donald from his roommates. If I ever questioned his relationship to my father, those questions were dispelled when I saw Donald's photo. He looks just like our father! See for yourself.

Even after receiving the news of his death, I've continued to search for any historical record of Donald's life. Unfortunately, the only mention of Donald is in his birth certificate and his death certificate. I can't find any mention of him in the 1930 federal census, nor in any WWII military records. And his mother is just as elusive!

UPDATE #2: During a sleeples night, I got on my IPad and did some new searches. I found Donald listed as Donald Abenland in the 1940 Census, living with his grandparents, Julius and Nellie Flaugher. Then I found a Marion Hubbard born in 1909 in Illinois, whose maiden name was Flaugher. I found her listed in the 1920 Census in Richmond, California with her parents. Marion's death records state that she died in San Diego County, California in 1981. I have added her to Find A Grave, with "Burial Unknown" and have linked her to Donald.

After finding this out, I REALLY couldn't sleep. I checked NewspaperArchive.com and came across three articles about Marion. One was a story she had written when she was 11. The other two were about her running away and deserting her baby. In one, the baby is even identified with the first name of Donald.

Please read the article on here and on her memorial. I feel so sorry for this young girl! She ran away once and they found her. She ran away a second time. I don't know yet if she was eventually found or not. (More research is needed.) And I'm mad at my father for being a part of such turmoil in her young life.

UPDATE #3: I received an email in August, 2013 regarding Donald's mother. A distant relative gave me the information that her father was not Julius Flaugher, even though that last name was used in all of the newspaper articles and on Donald's birth certificate. Whether Julius Flaugher adopted Marion is unknown at this time.

Marion's real father was Stacy Honor Pigott. He and Nellie, Marion's mother, were married in Kane County, Illinois on June 21, 1899. At first I was skeptical, but then I remembered that one of Donald's roommates told me that Donald talked about a sister with the last name of Pigott, who lived in the bay area of California. I want to thank Cheryl Rene for the information and for the two other newspaper articles on Marion and her abandonment of Donald. Look at that, I now have a picture of Donald as a baby and one of his young mother.

More research is needed. I'm interested in finding out if this sister had any children who might still be around.
If anyone out there knows anything about Donald or his mother or family, please contact me!

    Notes:

Joseph was the son of Joseph John Malarky and his wife, Edith Elizabeth Elliott. He was one of two children born to the couple. He had a sister, Janet Marguerite.

According to his birth announcement, which I found in my grandmother's trunk in 1968, Joseph was born on March 11, 1916 at 6:50 PM. He weighed six and a half pounds. His mother gave his name as Joe Malarky Jr., but we know that his middle name was not John, like his father, but Arthur, so he wasn't really a "Junior." Whether he used the term Jr. is unknown.

On November 3, 1942, Joseph enlisted in the United States Army in Indianapolis, Indiana. His record shows that he was 5.8" tall and 166 lbs. at the time. This same document also states that he had one year of college and his civil occupation was either a lawyer or judge.

In searching the Indianapolis city directories on Ancestry.com, I located listings for Joseph. In 1942 and 1949, he is listed as a lawyer.

Like his father, Joseph went to Purdue University. He was in the Class of 1938. Joseph was also a member of his father's fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega. Pictures in the 1935, 1936 and 1937 yearbooks verify this. However, also like his father, I can't find whether he graduated or not. He is not listed in the 1938 yearbook.

As of this writing, I haven't found a marriage record for Joseph.

Joseph passed away on August 26, 1991 in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2008, I found a record of his obituary in the Arizona Republic, the date unknown. I wasn't able to read it online, but I found that a copy of that newspaper was held at the Hayden Library at the University of Arizona. I called, but couldn't get a copy of it from them. However, a man named Steve read it to me over the phone.

The obituary said that Joseph was 75 years old, living in Phoenix. He had been an insurance adjuster. The obituary went on to say he was a US Army Veteran and was buried in Resthaven Park West Cemetery in Glendale, Arizona on August 30, 1991. The man I talked to at the library said there was no mention of any relatives. That could mean he had never been married or had been married and divorced. As for any children, I don't believe he had any or they would have been listed in the obituary.

I then called the cemetery but they refused to give me a copy of his interment card in their records. I did find out that his location is Section 18, Block 59, Space 4.

    Joseph's Find A Grave memorial is 29120094.

Liz, Robert's sister said in an email, "Bob loved baseball and particularly the NY Yankees. He enjoyed sports, telling bad jokes and teasing his sisters. He played basketball in the driveway--sometimes during summer rainstorms (make that, downpours) which earned him the nickname, "The Monsoon" or "Monsoon Bob." He enjoyed beating me [Liz] at a game called "Acey--Duecey" which is similar to Back Gammon. he played video games. He impersonated televison celebrities. He blew into a conch seashell and could make it sing...a bit like a Norseman blowing a horn. This is how we always rang in the New Year. I miss him."
