William and Eliza adopted the son of William Harry Harter and his wife, Ruth O Dunklebarger. Ruth died of an infection due to childbirth the day after her son was born. The father died in 1935. The boy was known as "William G Keen", as evidenced by the 1930 Federal Census where he was listed with that name, as the Keen's adopted son. It's unknown if or when the boy was formally adopted and where his biological father was.
