  According to the 1900 Census, Kate was born in Feb, 1870 in Louisville, Kentucky. I don't know the names of her parents. Her maiden name comes from the birth record of her son, James, in Washington state. Note that her death record attached here states she was "about 52", which led the doctor to give her birthdate as 1867. Kate married Robert January Huston on June 5, 1888 in Floyd County, Indiana. The couple had three children, with only two living when the 1900 Census was taken. Their names were Vance Morton Huston and James Mallernee Huston. Census records and city directories show Robert practicing medicine in San Francisco from at least 1898-1905. I assume Kate was living with her family, even though she is not listed in the directories. In 1905, Kate and Robert separated. He left the United States for Japan with his two young sons. The sons eventually came back to the United States, but Robert died there in 1920. According to the California, San Francisco Area Funeral Home Records, 1835-1979, Kate died at San Francisco General Hospital. Her cause of death was "hepatic cirrhosis and chronic myocarditis." Her specific records were from the Halsted & Co. Funeral Home. This record also says that she was buried in Pacific Grove, which would be El Carmelo Cemetery. On April 3, 2014, I spoke with Darlene at the cemetery office. She stated that Kate is listed under the last name of Houston. She said she would correct the record and/or cross reference the correct spelling of Huston with her burial information in her office. Darlene also told me that Kate was buried on April 7, 1919 and gave me her location in the cemetery, which I have included below.
