| 3198 | Like many German names, there is some discrepancy as to this man's name. Some places his name is spelled as Gottlieb, other times it's Gottlob. His interment records use the latter, so that's what I'm using. Gottlob was the son of Gottlob Friederich Obenland and Jacobine Guenzel. He had 8 brothers and sisters. After his mother died, his father married Katharine Friederike Wieland. She is not the children's mother, as she herself was born in 1842. Gottlob Friederich, the son, and the topic of this memorial, was born on April 5, 1850 in Kleinaspach, Wuerttemburg, Germany. His siblings were Friederike Magdalena (9/24/1839), Luise (2/6/1841), Wilhelmina (3/16/1843), Ernestina (10/29/1848), Johan Carl (12/24/1851) and August (9/9/1854). One sibling died as a newborn or stillborn on 4/29/1848. Gottlob came to the United States in 1869. The 1870 Federal Census shows he was working as a bar tender in Philadelphia, Pennyslvania. On July 27, 1873, Gottlob married Wilhelmina Schickler. Their marriage took place in Philadelphia at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. His wife is listed as "Mina." By 1880, the couple had three children: Emma, born in 1875; Wilhelmina (Minnie), born in 1877; and Louisa (Lizzie), born in 1878. Their other children were William, born in 1880, Charles born in 1883, Friederike, 1888 and Margaret, 1890. All of their children were born in Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia City Directory for 1890 lists Gottlob as a baker at 2860 Amber St. On February 14, 1895, Gottlob bought the property at 669 E. Lippincott Street. The Philadelphia Inquirer listed the sale in its February 16, 1895 edition. The purchase price was $800. In the 1900 Census, the family was then living at the Lippincot St address. On August 1, 1902, the Philadelphia Inquirer listed the transfer of the property at 665 and 667 E. Lippincott St. The seller was George K. Cummings and the buyer was Gottlob F. Obenland. The transfer of title had taken place on July 22, 1902. Each lot was 14.3' x 50', and the sales price for both was $3,100. From those addresses, the family lived and worked. County records in 2009 show that the structures where Gottlob lived and worked in 1900 are no longer there. They were torn down and three row houses built on the lots in 1920. Two are privately owned and one is owned by Inner City Rehab, Inc. Sons William and Charles went on to own their own plumbing company, aptly named Obenland Brothers Plumbing. They ran their business out of the 669 address. Friederich became a bookkeeper and married Anna E. Allen in 1913. William first marriage was to Lillian Gross in 1902. He lost her to smallpox two years later. William went on to marry Feronica (Fannie) McKnight. Charles married Cora Rustine. Their daughter Wilhelmina married Charles Zeiser in 1904. Margaret married Alfred D. Rapp in 1913. All of the marriages took place in Philadelphia. No marriages have yet been found for Emma and Louisa. Gottlob died on August 18, 1920 and was buried on August 23, 1920. His wife Wilhelmine was buried next to him three years later. | Obenland, Gottlob Friederich (I4390)
