| 2962 | Jacob was the son of Ludwig Heinrich Obenland and Anna Maria Kronmueller. He was born on August 24, 1834 in Ohnholz, Wurttemburg, Germany. He was christened in the Lutheran church in Ohnholz on August 27, 1834. Jacob's father was born in Ilsfeld and his mother born in Buechelberg. Jacob was one of seven children born to Ludwig and Anna Maria. He had four brothers, David Friederich Jacob, Johann Jacob Friederich, Karl and Johann Jacob, who passed away when he was 2 weeks old. Johann's two sisters were Catharina Friederike Dorothea and Catharina Dorothea Friederike Jacobina. Jacob's first marriage was to Christiana Luisa Schukraft, a young lady born in Heilbronn on May 11, 1833. Her parents were Georg Adam Christian Schukraft and Anna Katharine Vogelmann. Jacob and Christiana were married in the Lutheran church in Heilbronn on April 30, 1854. The couple had two daughters. Their first was Karoline Friederika, born on October 21, 1856. Karoline died on August 16, 1857 at the age of 10 months. The records show an unnamed daughter born to them on September 16, 1858. Christiana died sometime between that time and 1860. On October 6, 1861, Jacob married Christine Rosine Foernsler. They were married in the Lutheran church in Oehringen, Jagstkreis, Wurttemburg. Christine was born in 1841 in Baumerlenbach, Wurttemburg, Germany. The couple had one child that we know of, Christian Carl Jacob Ferdinand (Carl), born in December of 1861. In the fall of 1887, Jacob, Christine, their son Carl and Carl's 5 year old adopted son, Adolph, left Bremen, Germany on the Rhein. They arrived in New York in October, 1887. The family first settled in Howard County, Maryland. On October 26, 1890, their son Carl remarried. He and his new wife gave Jacob 5 more grandchildren. Unfortunately, two died as babies. Jacob died in Howard County on December 17, 1897. He was buried in Saint Paul's Lutheran Church near his two grandchildren. | 2963 | James A. Lamping, Sr. The loving husband of Katherine J. Speth Lamping, and father of James (Julie) Lamping Jr., Michael (Marla) Lamping, Barbara (John) Bruce, Mary (Bart) Johnson, Diane (Jack) Gritt, died Friday, August 11, 2006. He is also survived by brothers, Larry and Joseph Lamping, 18 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. His daughter, Peggy Lamping, and brother, Richard Lamping, preceded him in death. James was born July 20, 1931 in Indianapolis to the late Lawrence and Gertrude Lamping. James owned and operated Ray Brothers Cleaners. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and a 3rd degree charter member of the Knights of Columbus #3660, of which he held various offices. James volunteered much of his time to charities such as Meals on Wheels and delivering Thanksgiving Day dinners. | 2964 | James Francis Huston was born on Nov. 16, 1909 in Los Angeles, CA. However, the State of California searched from 1905 thru 1914 and couldn't find a copy of his birth certificate. His parents were James Lee Huston and Emma Cecilia Bachmann Howe. (The Bachmann was her birth name, Howe was her adopted name.) James had one sister, Geraldine Cecilia, born in 1915. James was named for his father. I always thought his middle name, Francis, honored his mother's adopted mother, Frances Rose Howe. However, after finding earlier members of the family I found a great uncle named Francis Lee Huston. Maybe James' middle name came from this great uncle. James was a trumpet player in Los Agneles. He played in a band with his good friend, Phil Harris. Mr. Harris became a Hollywood legend. You might remember his voice from the Disney cartoon, "The Jungle Book." He was the voice of the bear who sang, "The Bear Necessities." James committed suicide on March 16, 1937. His death certificate indicates his car was found in Malibu, 100 ft. off of Roosevelt Highway. It states, "Tubed exhaust to his closed Ford car." The cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning. He was 27 years old. The article in the Los Angeles Times regarding his suicide says he left a note saying, "I will take to the grave the reasons for my actions." His occupation is listed as a musician in an orchestra. At the time of his death he lived at 1327 N. Kingsley, Los Angeles, CA. His sister, Geraldine had two children. They were always told that their Uncle Jimmy died in a car accident. In 1978, James niece, Cecilia, went to the Los Angeles City Library and found the article about his death on microfilm. Imagine her shock when she learned that James had not died in a car accident, but comitted suicide. The family story goes that James's mother gave his trumpets and music to his good friend, Phil Harris. James death certificate shows his name as Francis James Huston, although he was always talked about as Jimmy. And, I believe Forest Lawn where his ashes are, has him listed also as James Francis Huston. Maybe he was given the name Francis James Huston and that is why CA shows no record of his birth under the first name James. James died on March 16, 1937. He was cremated on Saturday, March 20, 1937 in Los Angeles. His funeral was held the same day. However, his cremated remains were not interred at Forest Lawn until Aug. 10, 1937. I suspect that his mother was trying to get the money together to pay the bill. Unfortunately, I have not found any pictures of James. | 2965 | James Lee Huston was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to James A and Elizabeth Huston. Elizabeth's maiden name was Elizabeth Morgan Johnson. Both of James Lee's parents were born in Kentucky. Elizabeth was born in Johnson Junction, which is not on any of today's maps. Johnson Junction was in Fleming County. I believe that it is now called Flemingsburg. James married Emma Cecilia Bachmann Howe in Kansas City, MO on Jan. 20, 1908. Emma was the adopted daughter of Frances R. Howe of Porter County, IN. (See Emma's bio on Find a Grave under Emma Price.) The couple settled in Los Angeles, CA where they had two children, James Francis and Geraldine Cecilia. Emma kept house while James worked as a traveling saleman. On one Census, it says he sold shoes. In January, 1922, James and Emma were divorced. The records are in Los Angeles County, D3058. James then married his housekeeper, a widow named Gertrude Johnson, in Venice, CA on May 27, 1922. On the marriage certificate, James' occupation is listed as, "a man of leisure." James was 53; Gertrude 45. James Lee died in Los Angeles on Sept. 19, 1935 at 9:30 AM of heart disease, with a contributing factor of cerebral thrombosis. He had been ill from September 2nd. As yet, I don't know where James is buried. His death certificate states that he was buried on September 21, 1935. The place of his burial is listed as the University of Southern California. The funeral director is listed as LA County General Hospital, and he was not embalmed. Could this mean that his body was donated to science? During his life, James stated that he was born in Granville, Quinault and Tacoma. His birth record at the Washington State Digital Archives states he was born in Granville, Washington, which at the time was in Chehalis County. I believe that the record, written at the time of his birth, is correct. Another problem in writing about James is that there are variations in his birthdate. The date on his birth record at the Washington State Digital Archives says he was born on October 6, 1893. The 1900 Census states that he was born in October, 1893. However, his WWI and WWII Draft Registrations list his birthday as Oct 3, 1894. Two passenger lists also use that date. His California Death Index shows he birthday as being Oct 3, 1896. I think we can discount this record. So, was he born in 1893 or 1894? Was he born on the 3rd or the 6th of October? I think the year was 1893, as that is what his birth record says and what his parents gave to the census taker in 1900. As to the date, I would say that the 6th is probably correct. His father is the person who filed the birth with the county in Washington, so I believe he would know the date his son was born. I could be wrong, though! Robert and Kate Huston separated in about 1905. Robert left the United States for Japan, taking his two young sons with him. James and his brother, Vance, attended St. Joseph's College in Yokohama. This was a school, mainly attended by foreign children, from kindergarten through secondary school. Passenger records show that Vance returned to the United States in 1911. James is shown on the passenger list of the steamship Nile, departing from Kobe, Japan on August 6, 1912 and arriving in San Francisco on August 26th, with a stop along the way in Honolulu. The Nile was a British steamship, owned by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Kate Huston passed away in San Francisco in 1919 and Robert in Japan the following year. Records on the Internet show that James attended college at Stanford University in California, the University of Chicago, where he was enrolled in 1917 when he registered for the WWI Draft. He graduated in 1921 with a degree in medicine from the University of Cincinnati. In about 1918, James married Jennie H. Stout. They came to Caifornia where James established himself as a physician, specializing in eyes, ears and the nose. I can't find any record of any children born to them. They were divorced in about 1936. A city directory in 1936 shows James living alone at 1526 Carol, in Burlingame, California. In 1937, James is living with a wife, Julia M. Huston. Either James and Julia were divorced or Julia passed away, because James went on to marry Shirley J Stefan on January 27, 1951 in Alameda County, California. James made several trips abroad. Passenger lists show James and Jennie returning from the Panama Canal Zone in 1924. In 1926, they must have gone to Europe, as a record exists of Jennie returning on the Orbita, from Cherbourg, France, arriving on June 28, 1926. James came home on the Orca, departing from Cherbourg and arriving in New York on July 12, 1926. Why they came home separately is unknown. In 1953, James and his third wife, Shirley, visited Italy. They returned on the Independence, leaving Genoa on May 26, 1953 and arriving in New York on June 3rd. Sometime after they were married, James and Shirley moved to Los Angeles County, California. | 2976 | Jennie was the daughter of John and Anna Strachan. John was a sergeant in the New York City Police Department. Besides Jennie, the couple had at least one other daughter, Martha. The 1900 Census shows that John's nephew, Floyd, was also living with them at that time. Jennie married Gustave Obenland in Kings Co., NY, on Aug. 23, 1900. Their marriage certificate number is 5063. They had at least one son, George G. Obenland and one daughter, Dorice. Her husband was a house painter, while Jennie kept house for the family. In 1918, Jennie lived with their son at 1952 E. 9th St., Brooklyn, NY. At that time, her husband, Gustave, was a patient at the Brooklyn State Hospital. His WWI draft registration states that he was disqualifed for military service due to a "mental disease." The 1920 Census shows Gustave a patient at the same hoipital. At the same time, Jennie and her two children were living with her parents, John and Anna Strachan. Their address was 2339 Coney Island Avenue. Jennie was working as a cashier, at a place having to do with "bathing." I bet she worked on the beach for a company that had a bathing area for tourists. Jennie died in April, 1963. She was buried on April 17, 1963 in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY in the Strachan family lot. There are 9 other Strachans buried there. Her son, George G. Obenland, is also buried in the same lot, as is her mother Anna and father John. NOTE: Jennie is listed in the cemetery records as Jennie B. Oberland. So is her son, George. | 2991 | Johann went by his middle name of Christian. He was born in Ilsfeld, Wurttemburg, Germany to Jakob Obenland and Marie Elisabet Widmann. He was first married to Christiane Luise Schulkraft on April 30, 1854. Christiane was the daughter of Georg Adam Christian and Anne Katherina Vogelman Schuhkraft and was born May 11, 1833. Christiane passed away on Sept. 25, 1858. On May 5, 1859, Christian married Auguste Rosine Peter. Rosine was born to Jacob Friedrich and Sophie Dorothea Rumerlin Peter on January 5, 1827. Christian and Rosine had two children that have been found at this time: Friederika Dorothea Caroline, born on October 31, 1859 and Marie Caroline, born May 22, 1862. In 1882, their two daughters immigrated to the United States. Christian and Rosine followed Friederika and Mary two years later. They left Bremen, Germany on the Elbe and arrived in New York on September 9, 1884. The Elbe was in service from 1881-1895. It was owned by the North German Lloyd shipping line. The ship was built by John Elder & Co., of Glasgow, Scottland. It's maiden voyage was from Bremen-Southampton to New York on June 24, 1881. The Elbe collided with another steamer, the Crathie in the North Sea on January 30, 1895. Over 330 lives were lost when the ship went down. Christian was a blacksmith. The Peoria, Illinois Directory for 1890-1892, lists him working for John Schneider at 100 Cross St., in that town. For some reason, Christian returned to Germany and then came back on the Prussia on September 29, 1894. Christian died in 1897. If he is buried in the same cemetery as his wife, daughters and grandchildren, Bluff City Cemetery has no record of it. His estate was probated in Kane Co., Illinois in 1897 under the name Obenlandt. | 2992 | Johanna was born in Ilsfeld,Wurtemburg, Germany on September 11, 1797. Her parents were Georg Frederick Obenland and Dorthea Maria Oehler. She was christened in the Lutheran Church in Ilsfeld, Wurttemburg, on September 12th. Johanna arrived in the United States on October 1, 1819 on the ship the Susquehanna. The voyage begain in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and ended in the Port of Philadelphia. Johanna met and married another German immigrant, August Emanuel Deininger. Their wedding was on June 12, 1821 in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Reading, Pennsylvania. The couple had 10 children. Their first child was a daugher, Anna Maria "Mary" Deninger, born on December 4, 1823 in Bernville, Berks Co, Pennsylvania. C.F. Deninger came along next, his birth date unknown at this time. Jonathan O. Deininger was born in Womelsdorf, Berks Co, Pennsylvania on April 17, 1830. Their 4th child was also a son, Benjamin O. Deininger born in Pennyslvania on July 31, 1832. Augustus O. Deininger, their last child, was born in Pennsylvania in about 1838. Only five of the children lived to adulthood. The names of the children who died in their infancy or childhood are unknown at this time. Johanna's husband worked a candle maker and a marble cutter, while she kept house and looked after the children. The family lived in Philadelphia, New Berlin County and finally Centre County. Johanna died on April 20, 1861. She is buried in Union Cemetery in Millheim, Centre Co., Pennsylvania. By 1875, when her husband died, their family had grown to include 5 living children, 10 great grandchildren and 25 grandchildren. | Obenland, Johanna Helena (I4408)

| 2994 | John George was born in Werberg, Unterfranken, Bavaria, Germany on July 7, 1862. His given name in Germany was Johann Georg, with his surname spelled Kremer. His parents were Heinrich Kremer and Margaretha Hartmann. Heinrich and Margaretha were married on February 15, 1847 in Werberg. John had four brothers, Konrad, 1847; Longinus, 1849; Joseph, 1853; and Valentin, 1850. He also had one sister named Justina, born in 1856. All of his siblings were born in Werberg. A passenger list with the name Johann Kremer exists showing this man arrived on March 9, 1892 at the port of New York. He had made the trip to the United States on the steamship the Edam. Whether this is the gentleman on this memorial is unclear due to statements our John made on his Petitions for Naturalization. John George Kraemer filed his "Declaration of Intention" (to become a US citizen) in the Kings County Court in New York on July 13, 1898. On August 4, 1903, he became a citizen of his adopted country. This was done in Brooklyn, New York in the United States District Court of the United States of America for the Easter District of New York. On that paperwork, John stated that he arrived at the port of New York in November, 1891. He also stated that he had been living in New York since then. Twelve years later, could he have forgotten when he came to this country? If so, than maybe he did arrive on March 9, 1892. If not, than he arrived in November of 1891, as stated in his Naturalization paperwork. (#348 in the Eastern District of New York.) John married Louisa Pauline Obenland in Manhattan County, New York on May 25, 1893. The couple had at least one daughter, Louisa, born on October 4, 1893 in Brooklyn. From the census records, it looks as if John worked in a brewery. In the 1900 census he stated that he was a driver. The 1910 record lists his occupation as a driver for a brewery. 1920 has John working as a bottler in a brewery. On John's Naturalization petition dated August 4, 1903, his character witness was a James T. Kinz, who was a liquor dealer. Mr. Kinz said that he had known John for 7 years, which means they met in about 1896. James Kinz was probably John's employer. John's wife, Louisa, passed away in 1937. John died on January 16, 1940. | 3000 | Joseph was the son of Joseph John Malarky and his wife, Edith Elizabeth Elliott. He was one of two children born to the couple. He had a sister, Janet Marguerite. According to his birth announcement, which I found in my grandmother's trunk in 1968, Joseph was born on March 11, 1916 at 6:50 PM. He weighed six and a half pounds. His mother gave his name as Joe Malarky Jr., but we know that his middle name was not John, like his father, but Arthur, so he wasn't really a "Junior." Whether he used the term Jr. is unknown. On November 3, 1942, Joseph enlisted in the United States Army in Indianapolis, Indiana. His record shows that he was 5.8" tall and 166 lbs. at the time. This same document also states that he had one year of college and his civil occupation was either a lawyer or judge. In searching the Indianapolis city directories on Ancestry.com, I located listings for Joseph. In 1942 and 1949, he is listed as a lawyer. Like his father, Joseph went to Purdue University. He was in the Class of 1938. Joseph was also a member of his father's fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega. Pictures in the 1935, 1936 and 1937 yearbooks verify this. However, also like his father, I can't find whether he graduated or not. He is not listed in the 1938 yearbook. As of this writing, I haven't found a marriage record for Joseph. Joseph passed away on August 26, 1991 in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2008, I found a record of his obituary in the Arizona Republic, the date unknown. I wasn't able to read it online, but I found that a copy of that newspaper was held at the Hayden Library at the University of Arizona. I called, but couldn't get a copy of it from them. However, a man named Steve read it to me over the phone. The obituary said that Joseph was 75 years old, living in Phoenix. He had been an insurance adjuster. The obituary went on to say he was a US Army Veteran and was buried in Resthaven Park West Cemetery in Glendale, Arizona on August 30, 1991. The man I talked to at the library said there was no mention of any relatives. That could mean he had never been married or had been married and divorced. As for any children, I don't believe he had any or they would have been listed in the obituary. I then called the cemetery but they refused to give me a copy of his interment card in their records.
