    Notes:

Gustave was the son of German immigrants Karl "Charles" Obenland and his wife, Friedericka Paulina Bernecker. Gustave had three sisters, Julia, Louisa and Frieda. He also had one brother, Charles.

Gustave was born on July 21, 1879 in Brooklyn, New York. His father worked in a brewery and his mother took care of their home and family.

On August 23, 1902, Gustave married Jennie Belle Strachan in King County, New York. (note: Strachan is pronounced Strawn.) Their Marriage Certificate is #5063. The couple had two children, a son named George born on December 22, 1902 and a daughter, Doris, born on August 4, 1915. Both children were born in Brooklyn.

The 1910 Census shows the family living in Brooklyn. Gustave was 31, Jennie was 29 and George was 7 years old. Gustave was working as a house painter.

Gustave was the contracting painter for the Brooklyn Heights Railroad. He also did side jobs, including painting the Brighton Beach Hotel and either Pimlico or Belmont Racetrack, among other things. The newspaper, The Brooklyn Eagle printed an article about Gustave's painting in their April 20, 1900 issue, which I've included in this memorial.

According to his granddaughter, Gustave also owned a tavern on Neptune Ave. in Coney Island. There is an article in the Brooklyn Eagle where the tavern is mentioned. The article is about local candidates campaigning in the neighborhood. I've also included an excerpt from that article in this memorial.

I have also found newspaper articles that mention Gustave as being a member of the Silver Star Social Club in Coney Island.

On April 23, 1918, Gustave was admitted to the Brooklyn State Hospital. This information is on his death certificate.

Gustave registered for the draft of WWI on September 12, 1918. His draft card says that he was disqualified from the draft due to "mental disease." At the time, Gustave was a patient at the Brooklyn State Hospital. On his draft card, Gustave was described as tall, stout, with brown hair and eyes.

In the 1920 Census, Gustave was still a patient in the same hospital. He continued as an inpatient there until he passed away. As per his death certificate, which I have included in this memorial, Gustave died at the Brooklyn State Hospital in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. His death certificate in that county is #9627. His death certificate says that he died from pneumonia, with "general paralysis of the insane." (Whatever THAT means.)

According to his death certificate, Gustave was buried on April 8, 1920 in the Evergreens Cemetery. The online records of the cemetery have a gap, which Gustave's death date falls into, so the plot number for Gustave was given to me by a clerk at The Evergreens Cemetery office.

    Notes:

Jennie was the daughter of John and Anna Strachan. John was a sergeant in the New York City Police Department. Besides Jennie, the couple had at least one other daughter, Martha. The 1900 Census shows that John's nephew, Floyd, was also living with them at that time. Jennie married Gustave Obenland in Kings Co., NY, on Aug. 23, 1900. Their marriage certificate number is 5063. They had at least one son, George G. Obenland and one daughter, Dorice. Her husband was a house painter, while Jennie kept house for the family. In 1918, Jennie lived with their son at 1952 E. 9th St., Brooklyn, NY. At that time, her husband, Gustave, was a patient at the Brooklyn State Hospital. His WWI draft registration states that he was disqualifed for military service due to a "mental disease." The 1920 Census shows Gustave a patient at the same hoipital. At the same time, Jennie and her two children were living with her parents, John and Anna Strachan. Their address was 2339 Coney Island Avenue. Jennie was working as a cashier, at a place having to do with "bathing." I bet she worked on the beach for a company that had a bathing area for tourists. Jennie died in April, 1963. She was buried on April 17, 1963 in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY in the Strachan family lot. There are 9 other Strachans buried there. Her son, George G. Obenland, is also buried in the same lot, as is her mother Anna and father John. NOTE: Jennie is listed in the cemetery records as Jennie B. Oberland. So is her son, George. Unfortunately, their last name is misspelled on the tombstones too. Buried Green-Wood Cemetery Brooklyn Kings County New York, USA Plot: Lot 15190, Section 188

    Notes:

Charles or Charlie as he was known by, was born in August of 1839 in Ohnholz, Wurttemburg, Germany. The month and year are taken from the 1900 Census. His parents were Ludwig Heinrich Obenland and his wife, Anna Maria Kronmueller. The 1900 Census also states that both Charles and Friedericka immigrated to the United States in 1865. Any other information regarding their arrival in the U.S is unknown. Whether Charles and Friedericka knew each other in Germany, met on the ship or met here in New York is also unknown. On May 20, 1866 he married Friedericka Pauline Bernecker in Manhattan County, New York. The marriage certificate is #216. Charles and Freda had eight children but only 5 lived. They were: Julie, Charles, Louisa, Frieda and Gustave. In the 1880 Census, the family was living at 316 E. 47th Street, in New York City. Charles was working in a brewery. By 1900, the family had moved to Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn. Charles listed his occupation in 1900 as "hotel." Whether he owned a hotel or was employed at one, we don't know. In the 1910 Census, Charles and his wife were retired and living at 110 Neptune Ave. in Brooklyn. Charles was 70 and his wife was 65. Charles must have passed away by 1920, because he is not listed in the census for that year. His wife, Friedericka, is listed living with their daughter, Frieda and her second husband, Jack Walsh. Notes:

As per the 1900 Census, Friedericka was born in December, 1846 in Wurttemburg, Germany. The LDS record that I found listed her birthplace as "Graogarkag." I can't find any place with that name, so I bet that's a misspelling. If anyone out there can figure out Friedericka's birthplace from that word, please let me know! Her parents were Arrissian Bernecker and his wife, Wilhelmine H. Klatz. The 1900 Census also states that she immigrated to the United States in 1865. On May 20, 1866, Friedericka married Charles Karl Obenland in Manhattan County, New York. Charles worked for a time in a brewery, then later at a hotel. Whether he owned the hotel or just worked there is unknown. The couple had eight children but only 5 lived. Their children were: Julie, Charles, Louisa, Frieda and Gustave. In the 1900 Census, the family was living on Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn. By 1910, they are at 110 Neptune Avenue. This might be the same house as in the 1900 Census, but it's hard to tell because that Census doesn't list a house number. By 1910, Charles and Friedericka were retired. Charles was 70 years old and his wife was 65. By 1920, Charles had passed away. Friedericka was living with their daughter Frieda and her second husband, Jack Walsh. They were still on Neptune Avenue, but the address then was 446 Neptune Avenue. Friedericka passed away in Brooklyn on December 26, 1922. She was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery on December 29th.
