    Notes:

David 's full name was David Friederich Jacob Obenland. He was the son of Ludwig Heinrich and Anna Maria (Kronmueller) Obenland. Ludwig was born in 1789 in Ilsfeld and Anna Maria, in 1806 in Buechelberg.

He was born in Ohnholz, Wurttemburg, Germany. David was christened on January 15, 1827 in the Lutheran Church in Untersteinbach, Jagstkreis, Wurttemburg. He was one of seven children born to Ludwig and Anna Maria. David's siblings were Johann Jacob Friederich, Catharina Dorothea Friederika, Catharina Friederika Dorothea, Johann Jacob, Johann Jacob, and Charles Karl. Brothers Johann Jacob (the one born in 1834) and Charles Karl also immigrated to the United States. Johann and his family lived for a time in Maryland. After he passed away, his grandson and family moved to Ohio. Johann's wife and three daughters stayed in Maryland. Charles Karl lived in New York, where he married and had eight children.

David married a young lady named Caroline Eisenmann in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 13, 1859. Unfortunately, the marriage record is hard to read, so if there's any more information to be gleaned from this record, I haven't been able to do it!

Their first child, Catharine, was born in Deptford Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey, on April 29, 1860. David and Caroline had five other children: an infant who was born and died on June 18, 1863. This child was also born in Deptford Township in Gloucester County. Daughter Mary C. was born May 15, 1865; another daughter, Caroline, was born on May 6, 1867. They also had two sons; George, born December 21, 1868 and David Jr., born in September, 1873.

The 1870 Federal Census lists the family still in Deptford Township, New Jersey. David was a farmer, whose real estate was valued at $2,000. His personal property was valued at $100.

Ten years later they're in Greenwich, New Jersey. David was still farming.

David passed away in East Greenwich, New Jersey on November 15, 1899. He was buried in the oldest part Eglington Cemetery on November 18, 1899.

    • Arrival: 19 May 1858, New York, New York, USA; from Le Havre, France on the Asa Eldridge with a 15 year old Gottleib Eisenmann. On the ship with them was 11 year old Johanna Kronmueller, a relative of the man she would eventually marry.

    • Residence: 1880, Greenwich Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey, USA; Age: 45; Marital Status: Married; Relation to Head of House: Wife

    Notes:

Caroline's parents are unknown at this time. She was born on October 22, 1834 in Gaisbuehl, Wuerttemberg, Germany.

According to the Wuerttemberg, Germany Emigration Index, Caroline applied for emigration to the United States in March, 1858. She applied in the district of Backnang.

The passenger list shows Caroline leaving Le Havre, France on the Asa Eldridge. She arrived in New York, New York on May 19, 1858. Traveling in steerage, she was accompanied by 15 year old Gottlieb Eisenmann, who was probably her brother or cousin. The next name on the passenger list is a girl, "Joh. Kronmuller." Her name was probably Johanna. It looks like she was 11 years old. Kronmueller is the maiden name of Caroline's future mother-in-law. It's possible, but not certain, that Johanna was traveling with Caroline and Gottlieb. It's also possible that Caroline met Johanna on the voyage. Maybe she met her future husband, David Obenland, because of a friendship struck up with Johanna while on the voyage to the United States.

However they met, Caroline and David were married on August 13, 1859 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The wedding took place in Saint Michael's and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The couple had six children: Catherine, born April 29,1860; an infant who was born and died on June 18, 1863; Mary C. born May 15, 1865; Caroline, born May 6, 1867; George, born December 21, 1868; and David Jr., born in September, 1873.

The Federal Censuses show that Caroline and her husband lived all of their married life in Gloucester County, New Jersey. David was a farmer, while Caroline took care of the home and family.

Caroline passed away on July 24, 1896 in East Greenwich, Gloucester County, New Jersey. She was buried on July 27, 1896 in Eglington Cemetery.
