Emily was the daughter of George Frederick and Louisa Kraemer Gahr. She was born in Fayetteville, NC on Aug. 21, 1924. Emily was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and Peace College. She married Billy Francis Chason on September 11, 1948, while he was in the Air Force. During that time, she served as a board member and officer of numerous Officers' Wives Clubs. Emily and Billy had one son, William Craig Chason. After being stationed in other areas, the couple returned to Fayetteville in 1964. Emily was a board member and volunteer with the Ft. Bragg Thrift Shop, receiving numerous awards for her dedication. She was also a volunteer for the Auxiliary Military Officers' Association of America. Emily was a tireless volunteer for many associations, organizing fund-raising events such as fashion shows and membership drives. She was adept at hosting events. Her husband, Lt. Col (Ret) Billy Francis Chason died Oct. 28, 2004. Emily followed him just 9 months later. They are buried together at Lafayette Memorial Cemetery in Fayetteville, NC. George, or Fred, as he was called, was the son of German immigrants Christian Gahr and his wife, Gottliebe Bartel. His mother's name is listed as Lillian on the 1900 Census, but as Mary on Fred's death certificate. His parents were both born in Prussia, Germany; his father in 1845 and his mother in 1849. Christian was a saloon keeper.

Fred was born on August 19, 1889 in Trenton, New Jersey. On his death certificate, the year is listed as 1891 and as 1898 on his WWI draft registration. I believe the year on the draft is incorrect, a mistake of the registrar. I believe the 1889 year is correct as that was stated on the 1900 Census, and thus was the closest document to the actual event of his birth.

Christian and Gottlieb had ten children in all. In the 1900 Census, it states that they had had 10 children, with only 6 still living by June 1, 1900, the day the census was taken. Their children were Herman, Gustav, Bertha, Mamie (probably Mary), Amelia, Emil, Joseph, Henry C and an unknown child.

When Fred registered for the draft for WWI, he was living in Evanston, Indiana. His occupation is illegible, except it looks like he was a laborer. He is described as being tall and slender with brown eyes and dark hair.

In about 1920, Fred married Louisa "Lulu" Kreamer. The exact date and place are unknown at this time. The couple had one child that we can find, a daughter, Emily, born on August 21, 1924 in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

In the 1930 Census, Fred and his family were living at 305 Green Street in Fayetteville, a place they were renting for $35 per month. Fred worked as a salesman for "gentlemen furnishings."

His wife, Lulu, died in December, 1964. Fred followed her on January 21, 1967. He was buried three days later.

Louisa, or Lulu, as she was called, was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 4, 1893. She was the daughter of John George Kreamer and his wife, Louisa Pauline Obenland. John George was a German immigrant, arriving in the U.S in 1892. His name in Germany was Johann Georg Kremer. Her mother, Louisa Pauline, was the child of German immigrants as well.

Louisa married George Frederick Gahr in about 1920. The couple had at least one child, Emily, born on August 21, 1924 in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The 1930 Census lists the family at 305 Green Street in Fayettelville. They were renting for $35 per month. Louisa was a housewife and Fred was a salesman of "gentlemen's furnishings."

Louisa passed away on December 16, 1964 at home in Fayetteville. She was buried three days later.

Her middle name was either Frederike, Frederika or Frieda. Her birth certificate, as indexed on the German Genealogy Group lists her middle name as "Fre". That could mean any of the variations mentioned.

John George was born in Werberg, Unterfranken, Bavaria, Germany on July 7, 1862. His given name in Germany was Johann Georg, with his surname spelled Kremer.

His parents were Heinrich Kremer and Margaretha Hartmann. Heinrich and Margaretha were married on February 15, 1847 in Werberg.

John had four brothers, Konrad, 1847; Longinus, 1849; Joseph, 1853; and Valentin, 1850. He also had one sister named Justina, born in 1856. All of his siblings were born in Werberg.

A passenger list with the name Johann Kremer exists showing this man arrived on March 9, 1892 at the port of New York. He had made the trip to the United States on the steamship the Edam. Whether this is the gentleman on this memorial is unclear due to statements our John made on his Petitions for Naturalization.

John George Kraemer filed his "Declaration of Intention" (to become a US citizen) in the Kings County Court in New York on July 13, 1898. On August 4, 1903, he became a citizen of his adopted country. This was done in Brooklyn, New York in the United States District Court of the United States of America for the Easter District of New York. On that paperwork, John stated that he arrived at the port of New York in November, 1891. He also stated that he had been living in New York since then. Twelve years later, could he have forgotten when he came to this country? If so, than maybe he did arrive on March 9, 1892. If not, than he arrived in November of 1891, as stated in his Naturalization paperwork. (#348 in the Eastern District of New York.)

John married Louisa Pauline Obenland in Manhattan County, New York on May 25, 1893. The couple had at least one daughter, Louisa, born on October 4, 1893 in Brooklyn.

From the census records, it looks as if John worked in a brewery. In the 1900 census he stated that he was a driver. The 1910 record lists his occupation as a driver for a brewery. 1920 has John working as a bottler in a brewery.

On John's Naturalization petition dated August 4, 1903, his character witness was a James T. Kinz, who was a liquor dealer. Mr. Kinz said that he had known John for 7 years, which means they met in about 1896. James Kinz was probably John's employer.

John's wife, Louisa, passed away in 1937. John died on January 16, 1940. He was buried with his wife on January 17, 1940.

Louisa was the daughter of Karl Obenland (aka Charles) and his wife, Friedericka Bernecker. According to the 1900 Census, Louisa's parents both immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1865. No passenger lists have been found for either Charles or Friedericka as yet.

Charles and Friedericka were married in 1866. Louisa was their third child. She had two sisters, Julie and Frieda and two brothers, Gustave and Charles.

Louisa's father worked in a brewery for awhile and then either owned a hotel or was employed by one. Louisa grew up in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York.

On May 25, 1893, Louisa married a German immigrant, Johann Georg Kraemer. He would be known in the United States as John George. The marriage took place in Manhattan County, New York. The marriage certificate is #6634.

The couple had at least one child, a daughter they named Louisa. She was born on October 4, 1893 in Brooklyn, New York.

Sometime before 1937, Louisa and John moved to Cumberland County, North Carolina. It was there on March 5, 1937 that Louisa passed away. She was buried in Cross Creek Cemetery #3 on March 7, 1937. Three years later her husband John would join her there.

Charles or Charlie as he was known by, was born in August of 1839 in Ohnholz, Wurttemburg, Germany. The month and year are taken from the 1900 Census. His parents were Ludwig Heinrich Obenland and his wife, Anna Maria Kronmueller. The 1900 Census also states that both Charles and Friedericka immigrated to the United States in 1865. Any other information regarding their arrival in the U.S is unknown. Whether Charles and Friedericka knew each other in Germany, met on the ship or met here in New York is also unknown. On May 20, 1866 he married Friedericka Pauline Bernecker in Manhattan County, New York. The marriage certificate is #216. Charles and Freda had eight children but only 5 lived. They were: Julie, Charles, Louisa, Frieda and Gustave. In the 1880 Census, the family was living at 316 E. 47th Street, in New York City. Charles was working in a brewery. By 1900, the family had moved to Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn. Charles listed his occupation in 1900 as "hotel." Whether he owned a hotel or was employed at one, we don't know. In the 1910 Census, Charles and his wife were retired and living at 110 Neptune Ave. in Brooklyn. Charles was 70 and his wife was 65. As per the 1900 Census, Friedericka was born in December, 1846 in Wurttemburg, Germany. The LDS record that I found listed her birthplace as "Graogarkag." I can't find any place with that name, so I bet that's a misspelling. If anyone out there can figure out Friedericka's birthplace from that word, please let me know! Her parents were Arrissian Bernecker and his wife, Wilhelmine H. Klatz. The 1900 Census also states that she immigrated to the United States in 1865. On May 20, 1866, Friedericka married Charles Karl Obenland in Manhattan County, New York. Charles worked for a time in a brewery, then later at a hotel. Whether he owned the hotel or just worked there is unknown. The couple had eight children but only 5 lived. Their children were: Julie, Charles, Louisa, Frieda and Gustave. In the 1900 Census, the family was living on Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn. By 1910, they are at 110 Neptune Avenue. This might be the same house as in the 1900 Census, but it's hard to tell because that Census doesn't list a house number. By 1910, Charles and Friedericka were retired. Charles was 70 years old and his wife was 65. By 1920, Charles had passed away. Friedericka was living with their daughter Frieda and her second husband, Jack Walsh. They were still on Neptune Avenue, but the address then was 446 Neptune Avenue. Friedericka passed away in Brooklyn on December 26, 1922. She was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery on December 29th.
