Rich was loved by so many. He was always known to crack a joke at any moment. He loved to laugh and he loved the sight of others smiling. He lived a life full of adventures and love. After an Honorable Discharge from the Army in 1963, Rich spent some years as a Deputy Sheriff, then later worked as an operator at 911. He loved to help people, and make sure things would work out for them. Rich loved to go camping and take his grandchildren fishing. He also loved to gamble with his friends out at the Coeur d'Alene Casino, which meant so much to him--he would always try to go out there and hit that big $5,000 in the bingo hall, even when he shouldn't have driven out there! He is survived by his son, Steve Obenland and wife, Liz, of Spokane; daughter, Christy Harbison, and her partner, Tom Burns, of Spokane Valley; grandchildren: Heather Obenland, Tony Obenland, and his wife, Jen, Shelby Harbison, Hunter Harbison, Katie Burns; great-granddaughter, Zoe Obenland; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Delores (Trudy) Obenland of Olympia, Jack and Janette Obenland of Post Falls, ID; and numerous nieces and nephews. After a life full of love from family and friends, Rich will now lay at rest with the love of his life, Kathleen Obenland, his wife of 36 years; and also his son, David Obenland. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 23, 2006 at Holy Cross Cemetery. Rev. Michael Kwiatkowski, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to: Horizon Hospice - 123 W. Visitation for Kathleen Marie "Kay" (Gies) Obenland, 58, will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Colbert. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Obenland, who was born in St. Ignatius, Montana, died Monday.

She graduated from high schol in St. Ignatius and from Kinman Business College in Spokane.

In 1963 she married Richard Obenland, and they moved to Spokane in 1974.

Mrs. Obenland worked as a supervisor for the Spokane County Auditor's Office for 27 years. She retired in January, 2000.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Steven Obenland of Spokane; a daughter, Christine Harbison of Newman Lake; seven brothers, JOhn Gies of Mead, James Gies of Colville, Washington; Daniel Gies of Missoula, William Gies of San Francisco, Stanley Gies of Winnemucca, Nevada, Charles Gies of Minden, Nebraska, and Rayond Gies of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,: four sisters, Jeannie Swanson of Spokane, Linda Gies of Arlee, Montana, Mary Gies of Missoula and Shirley Tennison of Kearny, Arizona; four grandchildren.
