    Lt. Col. (Ret) Billy Francis Chason was born on Jan. 25, 1921 in Lumber Bridge, North Carolina. He was the son of John C and Mary Clifton Chason. (Although the 1930 Census lists John as "Pete." ) He had an older sister, Mary Helen and a younger brother, Frederic Clifton. All three of the Chason children were born in North Carolina, as were their parents and grandparents. Billy enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 16, 1940. At the time, he was an automobile serviceman. He was not yet marrried. In 1948, Billy married Emily Marguerite Gahr. The couple had at least one son, William Craig, born in Cumberland Co., North Carolina. Billy was a Veteran of WWII. He begain his military career with the 30th Infantry Scotch Tiger Division based in Maxton/Laurinburg, North Carolina. He then was with the 8th Air Force, 381st Heavy Bomb Group, flying B-17's. Lt. Col. Chason was reported as a prisoner of war on Jan. 11, 1944, being detained in Germany for 16 months in Stalag I. He was assigned to the Pentagon in 1956. During that time, he was the chief pilot for then Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles. Lt. Col. Chason was President Dwight Eisenhower's first alternate pilot. After retiring from the Air Force in 1964, he worked in civil service at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Lt. Col. Chason died on Oct. 28, 2004 in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
