    Notes:

Middle name on the marriage record at familysearch.org says her middle name was Cleveland. It might be Obenland, after her mother's maiden name. So far, I can't find any connection to the name Cleveland.

There is a Ruth Hope who was born on 7 May 1896 in Manhattan County, NY (certificate 23263)

There is a Freda M Hopp who was born 18 May 1896 in Kings County, NY (certificate 7398)

There is a Ruth Hopp who married John Philips on 21 Jun 1934 in Kings County, NY 9certificate #9236) In the 1930 Census, Ruth is listed as Hopp, not Shea. So if she went back to her maiden name, this marriage could be hers.

Ruth married Patrick J Shea 5 Jan 1914, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, USA. Patrick (son of Mortimer Shea and Elizabeth Harrington) was born Abt 1880, New York, New York, USA; died Between 1914 and 1931. [Group Sheet]

    • Occupation: Jun 1900, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA; bookkeeper
    • Occupation: Mar 1903, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA; caretaker at Henry's Bathing Pavilion at Coney Island

    Notes:

On July 13, 1888, Richard arrived in New York. He had traveled on the steamship the Ems from Bremen to Southampton and then to New York. He was only 16 years old at the time and made the trip by himself. Richard traveled in steerage.

The Eider was a ship in the North German Lloyd line. Her maiden voyage was on June 2, 1884 from Bremen to Southamption to New York. She had 4 masts and 2 funnels. Her sister ship was the Eider.

On August 14, 1898, Richard married Frieda Obenland in Manhattan County, New York. (Certificate #12892.)

The 1900 Census says their only daughter, Ruth, was born in May, 1896. When the 1900 Census was taken, the Hopps were living in Brooklyn, New York.

In that same census, Richard was working as a bookkeeper. According to the census of 1900, Richard and Frida had been married for 6 years. This information isn't correct. Richard was born in 1872. If he had been 27 when married, that means he would have been married in 1899. If in 1900 he had been married for 6 years, he had to have been married in about 1894. But the marriage record shows they were married in 1898, but that might be an error by the person transcribing the marriage record. In other words, we really don't know exactly when they were married until we get the actual marriage certificate.

Richard passed away on March 6, 1903 in Kings County, New York. (Certificate #1387.) According to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, he committed suicide. At the time, Richard was working as a caretaker at Henry's Bathing Pavilion at Coney Island.

Richard was buried three days later on March 9th. He was buried in the Strachan family lot in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. (His sister-in-law, Jennie Obenland was a Strachan by birth.)

Richard married Frederike Anna Obenland 14 Aug 1898, Manhattan, New York County, New York, USA. Frederike (daughter of Karl Obenland and Friederike Pauline Bernecker) was born 5 Jul 1875, Manhattan, New York County, New York, USA; died Nov 1929, New York, USA; was buried 25 Nov 1929, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA. Notes:

Freda is listed sometimes as Freda and others as Anna. Her name on her birth certificate, as listed in the records at FamilySearch, is Frederike.

Born on July 5, 1875 in Manhattan, New York County, New York, she was the daughter of German immigrants Karl (aka Charles) Obenland and his wife, Frederike Bernecker.

Freda married twice. First to Richard Hopp in 1898, who committed suicide in 1903 and second, to John (Jack) Walsh in 1918. She had a daughter, Ruth, with Richard.

According to her burial record at Green-Wood Cemetery, she was buried on Nov. 25, 1929. Until I get a death certificate, all I can say is that she probably died Nov. 23 or 24th.

Freda was buried as Anna H. Walsh; using the last name of her second husband; but she was buried with her first husband, Richard Hopp.

    Notes:

Charles or Charlie as he was known by, was born in August of 1839 in Ohnholz, Wurttemburg, Germany. The month and year are taken from the 1900 Census. His parents were Ludwig Heinrich Obenland and his wife, Anna Maria Kronmueller. The 1900 Census also states that both Charles and Friedericka immigrated to the United States in 1865. Any other information regarding their arrival in the U.S is unknown. Whether Charles and Friedericka knew each other in Germany, met on the ship or met here in New York is also unknown. On May 20, 1866 he married Friedericka Pauline Bernecker in Manhattan County, New York. The marriage certificate is #216. Charles and Freda had eight children but only 5 lived. They were: Julie, Charles, Louisa, Frieda and Gustave. In the 1880 Census, the family was living at 316 E. 47th Street, in New York City. Charles was working in a brewery. By 1900, the family had moved to Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn. Charles listed his occupation in 1900 as "hotel." Whether he owned a hotel or was employed at one, we don't know. In the 1910 Census, Charles and his wife were retired and living at 110 Neptune Ave. in Brooklyn. Charles was 70 and his wife was 65. Charles must have passed away by 1920, because he is not listed in the census for that year. His wife, Friedericka, is listed living with their daughter, Frieda and her second husband, Jack Walsh. Notes:

As per the 1900 Census, Friedericka was born in December, 1846 in Wurttemburg, Germany. The LDS record that I found listed her birthplace as "Graogarkag." I can't find any place with that name, so I bet that's a misspelling. If anyone out there can figure out Friedericka's birthplace from that word, please let me know! Her parents were Arrissian Bernecker and his wife, Wilhelmine H. Klatz. The 1900 Census also states that she immigrated to the United States in 1865. On May 20, 1866, Friedericka married Charles Karl Obenland in Manhattan County, New York. Charles worked for a time in a brewery, then later at a hotel. Whether he owned the hotel or just worked there is unknown. The couple had eight children but only 5 lived. Their children were: Julie, Charles, Louisa, Frieda and Gustave. In the 1900 Census, the family was living on Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn. By 1910, they are at 110 Neptune Avenue. This might be the same house as in the 1900 Census, but it's hard to tell because that Census doesn't list a house number. By 1910, Charles and Friedericka were retired. Charles was 70 years old and his wife was 65. By 1920, Charles had passed away. Friedericka was living with their daughter Frieda and her second husband, Jack Walsh. They were still on Neptune Avenue, but the address then was 446 Neptune Avenue. Friedericka passed away in Brooklyn on December 26, 1922. She was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery on December 29th.
