Herbert Lewis Kupferschmid, age 89, of Mediapolis, died Tuesday, Jan 1, 2002, at the Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mediapolis. The son of Samuel and Lydia Viellieber Kupferschmid, he was born March 22, 1912, at Walcott, Ind. On Jan 22, 1949, he married Virginia Helenthal at Burlington. He was a farmer, farming in the Kingston community. He was a member of the Oakville Apostolic Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of Mediapolis; one son, Gary Kupferschmid and his wife Chris of Mediapolis; two grandchildren, one sister, Gladys Vierling of Mediapolis; one brother, Melvin Kupferschmid of Sequeim, Wash.; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Ada Drasil, Ella Reeser and Florence Davidson; and one brother, Ralph.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Friday, Jan 4, from the Oakville Apostolic Christian Church with the Ministers of the church officiating. Interment will follow at the Apostolic Church Cemetery.

Visitation is Thursday afternoon at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family will meet with friends from 6:30 - 8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials for the Oakville Apostolic Church or the Mediapolis Community Ambulance Service.

Anton was the son of Anton (Born in Baden) and Johanna Viellieber. Johanna's maiden name is unknown at this time. (Born in Prussia.) Anton was born in February, 1860 in Illinois. He had two sisters, Anna and Lizzie. In 1880, the Viellieber family was living in Akron, Peoria Co., Illinois. Anton Sr. was a farmer and his son worked on the farm with him. In about 1889, Anton married a young German girl named Friederika Obenland. She had come to the United States with her sister Maria in 1882. The couple had 6 children: Lydia, born in October, 1889; Samuel, born in September, 1890; Christian C., born in March of 1892; Marie Carolyn, born in November of 1893; Rosa, born July, 1896; and Emma, born inAugust of 1899. All of their children were born in Illinois. In 1900, the family was living on a farm in Rutland, Kane Co., Illinois. Anton, Friederika's husband, was a farmer, while she kept house for the family. Sometime between 1900 and 1910, they moved to White Co., Princeton Twp, Indiana. They couldn't be located in the 1920 Census; howerver, they were found in 1930, living at 484 North St., Elgin, Illinois. They owned their home, which at the time had a value of $3,500. Their children Samuel D., Rose J. and Emma F. were living with their parents in the house on North Street. Friederika was still keeping house, but Anton was then working as a night watchman at a shirt factory. Their son Samuel was also working as a night watchman, also at a shirt factory. Rose was working in the screw department of a watch factory and Emma was an inspector at a shirt factory. Daughters Lydia and Marie were married, with families of their own. Friederika was christened on Nov. 6, 1859 at the Evangelisch Church, Heilbronn, Neckarkreis, Wurttemburg. Friederika was the daughter of Johann Christian and Auguste Rosine Peter Obenland. She was born in Heilbronn, Neckarkreis, Wurttemburg, Germany on Oct. 31, 1859. She was christened on Nov. 6, 1859. In 1882, Friederika came to the United States with her sister, Maria. (Mary). In about 1889, Friederika married Anton E. Viellieber. They made their home in Elgin, Illinois.
