Arcadia Bowling Alley
at 1020 S. Baldwin Avenue in Arcadia, CA. When Cecilia and Michael were kids, this bowling alley was being built. There was plywood up in front of the building. They hid behind the plywood during the parade, the annual "West Arcadia Band Review" and shot peas from peashooters at the girls' bare legs when they marched by.

Front of a calendar that Sister M. Cecilia (nee Christiana "Anna" Agnes Obenland.
This was a calendar that Sister Cecilia sent to her sister-in-law, Anna Malarkey Obenland, at Christmas in 1902. Sister Cecilia was living at St. Aquinas Academy in Tacoma, Washington at the time. Cecilia Ann Obenland Backhaus Joder found this in her grandmother, Anna Malarkey Obenland's trunk. The trunk was Anna's father's, used when he immigrated to the United States in the 1860's. It was given to Cecilia in 1968, when she moved into her first apartment, after her mother died.

Peacock at the Los Angeles County Arboretum
"Lucky" Baldwin imported peacocks to his Santa Anita Rancho. They still live in the Arboretum and the area surrounding it. Just to the north and west of the Arboretum is a street called Rodeo Rd. Harold used to take Michael and Cecilia to Rodeo Rd. so they could feed the peacocks bread.

Results of Gottlieb Friederich Obenland Insanity Hearing
Gottlieb's son, Daniel, petitioned the court to judge his father insane. The verdict was entered on 15 Jun 1911. Gottlieb was probably not insane. Most likely, he was suffering from senility.

Statue of the Legendary Seabiscuit
This statue sits outside the entrance to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA. The park sits at the corner of Baldwin Avenue and Huntington Dr. When Cecilia was a child, she lived across the street from Santa Anita. Racing started the day after Christmas and she thought that they planned it that way to discourage kids from riding their new bicycles they got on Christmas Day!

She also used to go to the park early on Saturday mornings to watch the horses being exercised. She fell in love with horses and eventually when she had a family of her own and they moved to the desert, they all had horses.

The parking lot at the race track was huge. Michael had model airplanes with gas engines that were attached to a string. Their dad used to take them to the parking lot at the race track to fly the planes.

The Queen Anne Cottage
Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin, was the founder of Arcadia. In about 1875, he purchased the 8,000 acres known as Santa Anita Rancho. Here he built this home, which was completed in 1886. It's the epitome of a Victorian cottage. The Queen Anne Cottage and its grounds are part of the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia.

Cecilia always said this is the kind of house she would want to live in.
